William Edlin
William Edlin (May 3, 1878 – November 30, 1947) was a Ukrainian-born Jewish-American journalist, editor, and labor activist. Early life Edlin was born on May 3, 1878 in Priluki, Poltava Governorate, Russian Empire, the son of Paltiel Nochim Edlin and Miriam Borodinsky. Edlin immigrated to America with his parents in 1891, settling in San Francisco, California. He attended public school there and studied at Stanford University. As a student, he was influenced by socialist ideas and became close friends with writer Jack London. Career Journalism He moved to New York City in 1896 and began publishing articles in Anglophone socialist publications. Meyer London
Meyer London (December 29, 1871 – June 6, 1926) was an American politician from New York City. He represented the Lower East Side of Manhattan and was one of only two members of the Socialist Party of America elected to the United States Congress. Early life and education London was born in Kalvarija, Lithuania (then part of the Russian Empire) on December 29, 1871. Meyer's father, Efraim London, was a former Talmudic scholar who had become politically revolutionary and philosophically agnostic, while his mother had remained a devotee of Judaism. His father had established himself as a grain merchant in Zenkov, a small town located in Poltava province of the Ukraine, but his financial situation was poor and in 1888 his father emigrated with Meyer's younger brother to the United States, leaving Meyer behind. Abraham Walt (May 19, 1872 – November 5, 1938), better known by his pen name Abraham Liessin, was a Belarusian-born Jewish-American socialist activist, Yiddish poet, and newspaper editor. Life Liessin was born on May 19, 1872, in Minsk, Russia. On his mother's side, he was descended from the Maharshal, the Ba'al Halevushim, and Rabbi Raphael Cohen. His parents were Yehuda Leib Walt and Reile Hamburg. Liessin received a traditional Jewish education, but he developed heretical views that lead to his expulsion from the Volozhin Yeshiva. He then moved to Vilna, where he became involved in the revolutionary movement. In 1896, he was dissatisfied with the existing revolutionary organization and formed a new one called The Opposition. Hounded by the secret police, he fled Russia and moved to New York City in 1897. Jacob Rombro (October 10, 1858 – November 28, 1922), better known by his pen name Philip Krantz, was a Russian-born Jewish-American socialist, newspaper editor, and Yiddish writer. Life Krantz was born on October 10, 1858 in Zhuprany, Vilna Governorate, Russia, the son of Baruch Rombro and Bella Rosa Uger. Some biographers claimed he was born in Khodaki, Podolian Governorate. Krantz moved with his parents to Ashmyany, where he studied in a Russian school and had private tutors. In 1872, he began attending the Zhitomir rabbinical school. The Office of Comptroller of New York City, a position established in 1801, is the chief financial officer and chief auditor of the city agencies and their performance and spending. The comptroller also reviews all city contracts, handles the settlement of litigation claims (amounting to $975 million in 2019), issues municipal bonds, and manages the city's very large pension funds ($240 billion in assets under management as of 2020).
