Moultrie Municipal Airport
Moultrie Municipal Airport is seven miles south of Moultrie in Colquitt County, Georgia, United States. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 categorized it as a '' general aviation'' facility. It has no airline service. History Moultrie Airport was built before World War II; during the war it was used as an auxiliary training field for Spence Army Airfield a few miles to the northeast. Known as Spence AAF Auxiliary No. 3 It hosted the 455th School Squadron (Special) beginning on August 1, 1941 while still a civil airport. The airfield was released from military use on December 15, 1945 and returned to civil use. Southern Airways DC-3s began flights to Moultrie in 1949, but probably at Spence initially; by 1955 they were at Sunset Field, as it was then known. Moultrie is the county seat and largest city of Colquitt County, Georgia, United States. It is the third largest city in Southwest Georgia, behind Thomasville and Albany. As of the 2010 census, Moultrie's population was 14,268. It was originally known as Ochlockoney until it was incorporated by the Georgia General Assembly in 1859. Moultrie is an agricultural community set in the Southern Rivers part of Georgia. Downtown Moultrie contains the Moultrie Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes the Colquitt Theatre. Georgia World War II Army Airfields
During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) established numerous airfields in Georgia for antisubmarine defense in the Gulf of Mexico and for training pilots and aircrews of USAAF fighters and bombers. Most of these airfields were under the command of Third Air Force or the Army Air Forces Training Command (AAFTC) However the other USAAF support commands ( Air Technical Service Command (ATSC); Air Transport Command (ATC) or Troop Carrier Command) commanded a significant number of airfields in a support roles. It is still possible to find remnants of these wartime airfields.
