WPVD (1290 AM) is a public radio station in Providence, Rhode Island. It is owned by Rhode Island Public Radio. The station simulcasts WNPN 89.3 FM. WPVD transmits with 400 watts by day, 16 watts by night, using a one-tower omnidirectional antenna. The transmitter is off Douglas Avenue in North Providence. On November 23, 2018, the FCC granted a construction permit for W275DA, an FM translator station on 102.9 MHz. On September 30, 2021, 102.9FM began broadcasting from the same tower was WPRO-FM. WOON
WOON (1240 AM) is Woonsocket, Rhode Island's oldest radio station, having taken to the air on November 11, 1946 as WWON, a callsign it kept until the current WOON became available in 1992. The change in call became effective on February 3, 1992. On June 26, 1949 WWON added a sister station with WWON-FM on 105.5Mc/s. later moving to 106.3Mc/s. That station is now WWKX. WWON was owned by the local newspaper ''The Woonsocket Call'' for a time. It is currently owned by O-N Radio, Inc. WOON's programming day consists of almost exclusively locally originating programming with a few exceptions (Cowboy Corner, Old Time Radio, The Cowboy Show, and a few other shows). WBLQ (1230 AM) is a radio station licensed to serve Westerly, Rhode Island. The station is owned by Diponti Communications. History 1940s 1949 The station, then called WERI, began broadcasting on 1230kc. on July 1, 1949, using Day/Night power of 250 watts, non-directional. The station still uses its original 185-foot, Blaw-Knox, self-supporting tower, on Margin Street, beside the Pawcatuck River. 1960s The FCC increases the daytime power of all Class IV AM stations to 1,000 watts. WHJJ (920 kHz, "News Radio 920 & 104.7 FM") is a commercial radio station in Providence, Rhode Island. It carries a talk radio format and is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. The studios and offices are on Oxford Street in Providence. WHJJ operates at 5,000 watts. The transmitter site is off Wampanoag Trail (Rhode Island Route 114) in East Providence. A single non-directional tower is used during the day, providing at least secondary coverage to all of Rhode Island and the Massachusetts South Coast.
