''Mothers'' ( Macedonian: Мајки / Majki) is a 2010 film by Milcho Manchevski. An international co-production, the film mingles fiction with documentary. Premise Three stories, all true, one real. Employing an innovative structure, the three stories in ''Mothers'' highlight the delicate relationship of truth and fiction, of drama and documentary. What is the nature of truth? The film eschews neat narrative devices and pushes to confront their own definitions of filmic reality. The three stories focus on three aspects of life in contemporary Republic of Macedonia (a city, a small town and a deserted village). ''Mothers'', whose motto is “The Truth Hurts” explores the nature of truth – all three stories (two fiction and one documentary) are based on real events, but only one - the most incredible - is told as documentary. The Republic of North Macedonia (known as the Republic of Macedonia from 1991–2019) has submitted 18 films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1994. The Macedonians also attempted unsuccessfully to submit a film in 1991, while they were in the process of trying to achieve international recognition as an independent state. Prior to independence, Macedonian filmmakers were active participants in the Yugoslavian film industry, and several films made by Macedonian filmmakers were submitted for Oscar consideration as part of Yugoslavia. The last instance of this was Stole Popov's '' Happy New Year '49'' in 1987. This is a list of submissions to the 83rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The deadline for all countries to send in their submissions was 1 October 2010. The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2009, and 30 September 2010. 61st Berlin International Film Festival
The 61st annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 10 to 20 February 2011, with actress Isabella Rossellini as the President of the Jury. The Coen Brothers film ''True Grit'' opened the festival. 300,000 tickets were sold in total during the event, to 20,000 attendees from 116 countries, including 3900 members of the press. German actor Armin Mueller-Stahl received the Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement. Christina Kallas is a Greek-American film director, screenwriter, and producer whose films include ''42 Seconds of Happiness'', '' The Rainbow Experiment'', and '' Paris is in Harlem''. Life and career Kallas was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. She received a B.A., M.A, and PhD in Communication and Media Studies from Free University of Berlin.
