Elchanan Mossel ( he, אלחנן מוסל) is a professor of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His primary research fields are probability theory, combinatorics, and statistical inference. Research Mossel's research spans a number of topics across mathematics, statistics, economics, and computer science, including combinatorial statistics, discrete function inequalities, isoperimetry, game theory, social choice, computational complexity, and computational evolutionary biology. His work on discrete Fourier analysis and functions with low influence includes important contributions such as the proof of the " Majority is Stablest" conjecture, together with Ryan O’Donnell and Krzysztof Oleszkiewicz, and the proof of the optimality of the Goemans–Williamson MAX-CUT algorithm (assuming the Unique Games Conjecture), with Subhash Khot, Guy Kindler and Ryan O’Donnell. Hans Mossel
Henri Emile "Hans" Mossel (Amsterdam, 24 December 1905 – Auschwitz, German-occupied Poland, 4 August 1944) was a Dutch clarinetist and saxophonist. 1905–1935: Early years Hans Mossel was born into a very musical Jewish family. He was the son of a well-known Dutch cellist Isaäc Mossel (Rotterdam, 1870 – Amsterdam, 1923) and pianist Jeannette Belinfante (1868-1925). He spent his youth with his parents in Laren in the Netherlands, where he lived on the Velthuijsenlaan. At a young age he was taught to play the piano. His father stimulated his love for jazz. In 1923 Mossel played as a drummer and pianist in the “Larensche Jazz Band”. A couple of years later he formed his own jazz band “The Indian Jazz Band”. In 1931 Mossel was employed by the German violinist and bandleader Marek Weber and moved to Germany. Jacob Mossel
Jacob Mossel (28 November 1704 – 15 May 1761) went from being a common sailor to become Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1750 to 1761. He was of noble birth, born in Enkhuizen. When he was 15 he left as an able-bodied seaman aboard a Fluyt (a type of Dutch sailing cargo vessel) called ''de Haringthuyn'', bound for the Indies. As his family had a coat of arms, he was able to obtain a privileged position, through Dirk van Cloon, and was sent to the Dutch Coromandel (1721). On 30 March 1730, he married Adriana Appels, the fourteen-year-old stepdaughter of Adriaan van Pla, Governor of Dutch Coromandel. Jacob Mossel worked himself up finally to ''Governor and Director'' of Dutch Coromandel. In 1740 he got the title of ''Counsellor-extraordinary of the Indies'' and in 1742 he became a member of the Dutch Council of the Indies (''Raad van Indië'') in Batavia/Jakarta. Mossel Bay
Mossel Bay ( af, Mosselbaai) is a harbour town of about 99,000 people on the Southern Cape (or Garden Route) of South Africa. It is an important tourism and farming region of the Western Cape Province. Mossel Bay lies 400 kilometres east of the country's seat of parliament, Cape Town (which is also the capital city of the Western Cape), and 400 km west of Port Elizabeth, the largest city in the Eastern Cape. The older parts of the town occupy the north-facing side of the Cape St Blaize Peninsula, whilst the newer suburbs straddle the Peninsula and have spread eastwards along the sandy shore of the Bay. The town's economy relied heavily on farming, fishing and its commercial harbour (the smallest in the Transnet Port Authority's stable of South African commercial harbours), until the 1969 discovery of natural offshore gas fields led to the development of the gas-to-liquids refinery operated by PetroSA. ''Leucospermum praecox'' is an evergreen, rounded, upright shrub of up to 3 m (9 ft) high, and 4 m (12 ft) in diameter that is assigned to the family Proteaceae. It has hairless, inverted egg-shaped to broadly wedge-shaped leaves of about 5 cm (2 in) long with six to eleven teeth near the tip, globe-shaped flower head with initially yellow flowers, later orange or scarlet, with styles sticking far out, giving the head the appearance of a pincushion. It is called Mossel Bay pincushion or large-tufted pincushion in English. It flowers between April and September. It is an endemic species that is restricted to the very south of the Western Cape province of South Africa. Mossel Bay Commando
Mossel Bay Commando was a light infantry regiment of the South African Army. It formed part of the South African Army Infantry Formation as well as the South African Territorial Reserve. History Origin The unit was established on 14 February 1969. It was originally operated from the home of its first commander, Commandant Fred Robertson. In July 1975 a temporary office was established in George. From September 1978 the base moved to Point High School in Mossel Bay. In March 1994 it relocated to the Deon Visagie building headquarters in Voorbaai. On 1 April 1997 the Mossel Bay commando amalgamated with the Riversdale Commando to form the new Langeberg Commando. The new name was chosen on account of the nearby Langeberg mountain range, which was indicative of the geographical region for which the commando was responsible.
