Moshe Ponte
Moshe Ponte (also "Ponti"; he, משה פונטה; born August 29, 1956) is an Israeli former Olympic judoka. He is the President of the Israel Judo Association. He was born in Israel, and is Jewish. Judo career His coach was Morris Smadga. Ponte competed for Israel at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, in judo. In the Men's Half-Middleweight (U78) he came in tied for 20th, after losing to Michel Nowak of France, who won the bronze medal at the Olympics. When he competed in the Olympics he was 5-10.5 (180 cm) tall, and weighed 172 lbs (78 kg). He won a silver medal at the Belgian Open Championships Visé in 1986 in the U86 category. Israel Judo Association
The Israel Judo Association (Hebrew: ) is a sports association in Israel, and its headquarters is located in Tel Aviv, Israel. The Association operates Israel's national judo teams, holds the Israeli Judo Championships for different age classifications, and offers courses and seminars for instructors, coaches, and referees. It is a member of the European Judo Union. History The Israel Judo Association was established in 1965. Amos Greenspan, a second dan, was Chairman of the Association in the early 1970s. At that time, the Association did not easily recognize belts earned overseas, as it sought to maintain very high standards. The Association held Israeli Judo Championships from 1969 for men, and from 1976 for women. Judo At The 1984 Summer Olympics
The Judo competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics continued the seven weight classes first used at the 1980 Games. With the open division, there were eight competitions. Japan returned to the top of the medal count, after boycotting the Moscow games. Because of the Soviet-led boycott of the Los Angeles games, several traditionally strong judo countries, including Cuba and the Soviet Union, did not participate. The Judo competition was held at California State University, Los Angeles. Austrian Peter Seisenbacher in the 86 kg class won the gold medal, as did Hitoshi Saito of Japan in the over 95 kg class, feats they would repeat in 1988, becoming the first judoka to win gold at two Olympics. Popular pro wrestler/judoka Chris Adams appeared as an advisor to the UK Judo squad, where his brother Neil Adams won a silver medal in the 78 kg class. Shay-Oren Smadja ( he, אורן סמדג'ה; born June 20, 1970) is a former Israeli judoka and a judo coach. Smadja won the Olympic Games, Olympic bronze medal in judo at the 1992 Summer Olympics, making him the first Israeli man to win an Olympic medal, and the second Israeli overall after Yael Arad won silver in judo the day before. Career Smadja was born in Ofakim, Israel, to a family of Sephardic Jewish (Tunisian Jews, Tunisian-Jewish) descent. He won the Olympic Games, Olympic bronze medal in judo at the 1992 Summer Olympics the ''under 71'' category. In 1995, he won a silver medal at the 1995 World Judo Championships.
