Moses Jackson
Moses Jackson (January 14, 1822 - November 28, 1895) was a Confederate Army officer during the Civil War and a state legislator in Mississippi. He was accused of being a ringleader of violent Democratic Party election activities He served in the state legislature immediately prior to the Civil War, after it, and again after Reconstruction ended. He served in the state house and as a state senator for Wilkinson County, Mississippi. Moses Jackson was born January 14, 1822 in Amite County, Mississippi. He served in the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1861 and 1863. He fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and was eventually promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He returned to the state legislature and served in the Mississippi Senate from 1865 to 1867 after the war and again as a state senator in 1877 after Reconstruction for two more terms. Confederate States Army
The Confederate States Army, also called the Confederate Army or the Southern Army, was the military land force of the Confederate States of America (commonly referred to as the Confederacy) during the American Civil War (1861–1865), fighting against the United States forces to win the independence of the Southern states and uphold the institution of slavery. The Mississippi Senate is the upper house of the Mississippi Legislature, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Mississippi. The Senate, along with the lower Mississippi House of Representatives, convenes at the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson. Mississippi Plan
The Mississippi Plan of 1875 was developed by white Southern Democrats as part of the white insurgency during the Reconstruction Era in the Southern United States. It was devised by the Democratic Party in that state to overthrow the Republican Party in Mississippi by means of organized threats of violence and suppression or purchase of the black vote. Democrats wanted to regain political control of the legislature and governor's office. Their success in doing so led to similar plans being adopted by white Democrats in South Carolina and other majority-black states. To end election violence and ensure that freedmen were excluded from politics, the Democrat-dominated state legislature passed a new constitution in 1890, which effectively disenfranchised and disarmed most blacks by erecting barriers to voter registration and firearms ownership. The Mississippi House of Representatives is the lower house of the Mississippi Legislature, the lawmaking body of the U.S. state of Mississippi. According to the state constitution of 1890, it is to comprise no more than 122 members elected for four-year terms. To qualify as a member of the House candidates must be at least 21 years old, a resident of Mississippi for at least four years, and a resident in the district for at least two years. Amite County, Mississippi
Amite County is a county located in the state of Mississippi on its southern border with Louisiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,720. Its county seat is Liberty. The county is named after the Amite River, which runs through the county. Amite County is part of the McComb, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Amite County was established in February 1809 from the eastern portion of Wilkinson County. It was named after the Amite River. French explorers had named the latter for the friendly (''amitié'' in French) indigenous Houma people they encountered in the region.
