Moscow Calling (song)
''Moscow Сalling'' (titled ''Gorky Park 2'' in many countries, including Russia) is the second album by Russian rock band Gorky Park. It was released between 1992 and 1993. Four music videos were made for the album: "Moscow Calling", "Stranger", "I’m Going Down" and "Tell Me Why". Reception After Nikolai Noskov left the band in 1990, bassist Alexander Minkov took over as lead vocalist. AllMusic's Jason Anderson notes his "faux Joe Elliot vocals" and overall finds the album "at times extremely reminiscent of ''Pyromania''-era Def Leppard". The album went completely unnoticed in the U.S., where the band's MTV hit "Bang" was long forgotten by most rock enthusiasts and the taste of the audience had changed, but was well received in other countries. It sold 500,000 copies outside the United States, notably becoming Platinum in Denmark. Gorky Park (band)
Gorky Park (international title) or Парк Горького (Russian title) is a Russian hard rock band that gained mainstream popularity in the United States during Perestroika. Gorky Park is famous for its kitsch use of western stereotypes of Russians, such as pseudo-traditional clothing, balalaika-like guitar design and the hammer and sickle as their logo. It was the first Russian rock, Russian band to be aired on MTV. The Song Of The Volga Boatmen
The "Song of the Volga Boatmen" (known in Russian as Эй, ухнем! y, ukhnem!, "Yo, heave-ho!" after the refrain) is a well-known traditional Russian song collected by Mily Balakirev and published in his book of folk songs in 1866. It was sung by burlaks, or barge-haulers, on the Volga River. Balakirev published it with only one verse (the first). The other two verses were added at a later date. Ilya Repin's famous painting ''Barge Haulers on the Volga'' depicts such burlaks in Tsarist Russia toiling along the Volga. The song was popularized by Feodor Chaliapin, and has been a favorite concert piece of bass singers ever since. Bill Finegan's jazz arrangement for the Glenn Miller band took the song to #1 in the US charts in 1941. Russian composer Alexander Glazunov based one of the themes of his symphonic poem "Stenka Razin" on the song. The LP (from "long playing" or "long play") is an analog sound storage medium, a phonograph record format characterized by: a speed of rpm; a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter; use of the "microgroove" groove specification; and a vinyl (a copolymer of vinyl chloride acetate) composition disk. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. CNR Records
CNR is a Dutch audio and video label. It was founded in 1937 as CNR Records by Cornelis Nicolaas Rood, who made his fortune as a producer of lampshades and other lighting materials. Rood regarded his record label merely as a hobby, but things changed for the better in the early 1950s when CNR bought distribution and marketing rights for several foreign pop and classical record companies. He also signed up several local artists. One of CNR's first major successes was Dutch singer Gert Timmerman, who became one of the Dutch top selling male artists from the end of the 1950s. Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) was a division of a German media company Bertelsmann before its completion of sale of the majority of its assets to Sony Corporation of America on 1 October 2008. Dweezil Zappa (born Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa; September 5, 1969) is an American rock guitarist and occasional actor. He is the son of musical composer and performer Frank Zappa.
