Morton is a civil parish and village, three miles north of Alfreton in North East Derbyshire, Derbyshire, England. The civil parish population at the 2011 Census was 1,195. History A hoard of Roman coins found between Hagg House Farm and Morton Lodge Farm is the first evidence of human activity in the Morton area. The coins have been dated at 210 AD. Morton is first documented in the will of Wulfric Spott in 1002 and again mentioned in 1086 in the Domesday Book as one of the manors belonging to Walter D'Aincourt (Deincourt). The manor of Morton remained in the ownership of the Deincourts until the family line died out and then passed through several hands until being acquired by the Sitwells (of Renishaw) in 1749. The community holds an annual Morton Pumpkin Festival in the second week of September, and claims that 82 percent of the world's canned pumpkin is produced in Morton, earning it the designation "Pumpkin Capital of the World". Morton Castle
Morton Castle is located by an artificial loch in the hills above Nithsdale, in Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland. It lies north-east of Thornhill, and once formed part of a chain of castles along the strategically important Nith Valley, which runs from the Solway Firth north to the Clyde Valley. History In the 12th century, the honour of Morton was a possession of Dunegal, Lord of Strathnith (Nithsdale). A ditch to the south of the castle is thought to date from this period, although it may be natural. During the reign of Robert the Bruce the lands of Morton were held by Thomas Randolph, later the first Earl of Moray. __NOTOC__ Morton and Hanthorpe is a civil parish, formerly known as Morton by Bourne in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated north from Bourne, and south-east from Grantham. According to the 2011 Census the parish had a population of 2,406. History The village is in two parts, one each side of the fen-edge road, the A15. To the fenward side is Morton and to the upland side is Hanthorpe. The earlier name is that of Morton which will come from the acid peat land which the Anglian settlers found in the fen in around the year 500. The name therefore indicates that the fen was to a significant extent better called the bog in modern terminology. They were Germanic speakers so they called it a moor. Hanthorpe is a name indicating a subsidiary settlement established in the period of the Danish settlements, probably in the tenth century. Morton is a suburban village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district in Lincolnshire, England. The population at the 2011 census was 1,325. It is north of Gainsborough on the River Trent and forms part of a built-up area with the town. Morton is listed in the 1086 ''Domesday Book'' as "Mortune", with four households. It was a township of Gainsborough parish until 1846, when the first church, dedicated to Saint Paul, opened in the village. The church then became a chapelry, until 1866, when Morton was created a civil parish. The Grade II* listed church is dedicated to Saint Paul. The current building dates from 1890–91 and was built to the designs of J. T. Morton-on-Swale is a large village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies on the A684 road about 4 miles west of the County Town of Northallerton.
