Mort Schell
Morton William "Mort" Schell (born 13 July 1943) is a former Australian politician who was a National Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia between 1986 and 1989, representing the seat of Mount Marshall. Born in Goomalling, a small Wheatbelt town, to Winifred Lilia (née Kenworthy) and Roland William Schell, Schell was educated in Perth, boarding at Wesley College. He subsequently returned to Goomalling to farm, initially with his family and later independently, and also became involved with what is now the Western Australian Farmers Federation. He obtained a pilot's licence in 1966, and for several years worked as a commercial pilot and flying instructor based at Jandakot Airport. A former state secretary of the Young Country Party, and a member of each of the various iterations of the National Party, Schell was third on the Nationals' ticket for the Senate at the 1984 federal election. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. 1989 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 4 February 1989 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Labor government, led by Premier Peter Dowding, won a third term in office against the Liberal Party, led by Opposition Leader Barry MacKinnon. The result was a major swing against the Labor Party, coming in the wake of revelations of dealings between Government and business that came to be known as WA Inc. The redistribution that took place in 1988, based upon the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'' which abolished several country and outer metropolitan electorates while creating new metropolitan ones, makes it difficult to assess how Labor would have performed on the old boundaries—while it lost four seats, it gained one Liberal-held seat and won several of the new seats, so in net terms, it only lost one seat despite the massive swing and the low two-party-preferred result. Joondalup, Western Australia
Joondalup () is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, approximately north of Perth's central business district. It contains the central business district of the regional City of Joondalup and acts as the primary urban centre of Perth's outer northern suburbs. History During the latter part of the 1960s, the '' Metropolitan Regional Planning Authority'' developed the '' Corridor Plan for Perth'' which was published and adopted in 1970. Bert Crane
Albert Victor "Bert" Crane (27 January 1923 – 16 August 2003) was an Australian politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1974 to 1989, representing the seat of Moore. He represented the National Country Party (NCP) until 1985, and then the Liberal Party. Crane was born in Galle, Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), to Lavina May Victoria (née Beer) and Arthur Albert Crane. As a child, he lived in England for a period and then in Victoria, eventually arriving in Western Australia in 1926. His parents had a property at Bindi Bindi, a small Wheatbelt town, and he attended school there before going on to Geraldton High School. In 1942, Crane enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy. During the war, he initially served as a signalman at Albany, but was later posted to HMAS ''Horsham''.
