Morrilton Railroad Station
The former Morrilton station is located on Railroad Avenue, between Division and Moose Streets, in downtown Morrilton, Arkansas. It is a single-story brick building, with a tile roof and Mediterranean styling typical of the stations of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The broadly overhanging roof is supported by large brackets, with a telegrapher's bay projecting on the track side. Built about 1907, it is an important reminder of the railroad's importance in the city's history. It now houses a local history museum. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 as "Morrilton Railroad Station". Morrilton is a city in Conway County, Arkansas, United States, less than northwest of Little Rock. The city is the county seat of Conway County. The population was 6,992 at the 2020 United States census. History In 1825 a trading post was established about a mile south of present-day Morrilton on the Arkansas River. This town, later named Lewisburg, thrived after being incorporated in 1844. In 1871 the Little Rock and Fort Smith Railroad built track through present day Morrilton. It was later named Morrilton after the previous landowners E.J. and George H. Morrill. The downtown grew around the Morrills' land and that owned by James M. Moose. Residents of Lewisburg eventually moved away from the river and to the railroad hub at Morrilton. In 1883 Morrilton became the seat of Conway County, Arkansas. The Missouri Pacific Railroad , commonly abbreviated as MoPac, was one of the first railroads in the United States west of the Mississippi River. MoPac was a Class I railroad growing from dozens of predecessors and mergers. In 1967, the railroad operated 9,041 miles of road and 13,318 miles of track, not including DK&S, NO&LC, T&P, and its subsidiaries C&EI and Missouri-Illinois. Union Pacific Corporation, the parent company of the Union Pacific Railroad, agreed to buy the Missouri Pacific Railroad on January 8, 1980. Lawsuits filed by competing railroads delayed approval of the merger until September 13, 1982. After the Supreme Court denied a trial to the Southern Pacific, the merger took effect on December 22, 1982. However, due to outstanding bonds of the Missouri Pacific, its full merger into the Union Pacific Railroad did not become official until January 1, 1997. Morrilton Commercial Historic District
The Morrilton Commercial Historic District encompasses the historic central business district of Morrilton, Arkansas. The L-shaped district includes two blocks of East Railroad and East Broadway, between Division and Chestnut Streets, and three blocks of Division and Chestnut Streets, between Broadway and Vine. This area was mostly developed between 1880 and the 1920s, and was heavily influenced by the railroad, which passes between Broadway and Railroad. Prominent buildings in the district include the Morrilton Post Office, Morrilton Railroad Station, First National Bank of Morrilton, and the Coca-Cola Building (Morrilton, Arkansas), Coca-Cola Building.
