The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. A Workers' Political Reform Association was founded to nominate candidates for the 1888 election, at which the Brisbane Trades and Labor Council endorsed six candidates. Morningside is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Morningside had a population of 10,481. Geography It is located east of the CBD, and borders Cannon Hill, Norman Park, Seven Hills, Balmoral, and Hawthorne. There are many older-style weatherboard and chamferboard homes in this area as well as modern units and townhouses. History Morningside is said to be named after a local estate belonging to David Longlands. The name of the estate itself likely referred either to the Scottish town, or to the estate's location on the eastern side of Brisbane. It is also said to be named for the sight of the morning sun catching the banks of the river. The area was first settled by Europeans in the early 1870s. The land at that time was used mainly for agriculture; in particular, dairy, sugarcane and tobacco production. The old suburb of Colmslie was merged into Morningside. 2016 Brisbane City Council Election
Elections to Brisbane City Council were held on Saturday, 19 March 2016 to elect a councillor to each of the local government area's 26 wards and the direct election of the Lord Mayor of Brisbane. The election resulted in the comprehensive re-election of the Liberal National Party under Graham Quirk as Lord Mayor. The Liberal National's increased their representation by one ward to a total of 19 of 26. The lord mayoral result of 59.3% of the two-party-preferred vote was reduced for Quirk from the 69.5% result at the previous election. The main opposition party, the Labor Party was reduced to just 5 wards; its worst result in over a decade. The Queensland Greens won their first ward in this election. A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. Balmoral is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the Balmoral had a population of 3,893 people. Geography Balmoral is located east of the Brisbane CBD. History The name ''Balmoral'' is an anglicisation of ''Baile Mhoireil which is Scottish Gaelic for 'beautiful residence' or 'majestic castle'. Bulimba is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Bulimba had a population of 6,843 people. Geography Bulimba is located north-east of the CBD on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, but it is by road. Toponymy Bulimba is reportedly a Yugarapul word used meaning 'place of the magpie lark'. The same word is the origin of the nearby Bulimba Creek, and of the Bulimba Reach on which the suburb is located. The leader, Bilin Bilin, has his name based upon the magpie lark, or the pee-wee. History Bulimba was originally inhabited by the Yuggara people, who have lived in the area for at least 20,000 years. Hawthorne is a suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Hawthorne had a population of 4,989 people. Geography Hawthorne is located by road east of the CBD. Toponymy There are two theories about the name of the suburb. One is that butcher William Baynes purchased land in the area in 1875 and named the area after Hawthorn in Melbourne where he lived before his arrival in Queensland in 1859. An alternative theory is that Baynes planted many hawthorne bushes in the 1850s and 1860s. History Hawthorne started as a farming district in the 1860s, and was gradually subdivided as Brisbane grew. Norman Park is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Norman Park had a population of 6,287 people. Geography Norman Park is located by road east of the CBD. It borders East Brisbane, Coorparoo, Camp Hill, Morningside and Hawthorne, and is mostly residential. Toponymy Norman Park is likely named after an early estate in the area. Cannon Hill is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Cannon Hill had a population of 5,533 people. Geography The suburb is located by road east of the Brisbane GPO. History Cannon Hill was originally inhabited by Aboriginal people but, after being accused of "intimidating" the settlers, they were "dispersed" by the Native Police and Brisbane Mounted Police in November 1861, around the time when British settlement began in the area.
