Giuseppina Morlacchi
Giuseppina Antonia "Josephine" Morlacchi Omohundro (October 8, 1836 – July 23, 1886) was an Italian American ballerina, dancer, and actress. She introduced the can-can to the American stage. Biography Morlacchi was born in Milan in 1836 and attended dance school at La Scala at the age of six. She debuted on the stage in 1856 at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. In a short time, she became a well-known dancer, touring the continent and England. In Lisbon, she met noted artist and manager Don Juan (John) De Pol, who persuaded her to go to America and perform in his ''DePol Parisian Ballet''. In October 1867, she made her American debut at ''Banvard's Museum'' in New York City, performing ''The Devil's Auction''. She became an immense success, and DePol took the show to Boston. During her rise to fame, DePol insured her legs for $100,000, after which newspapers claimed that Morlacchi was 'more valuable than Kentucky'. Francesco Morlacchi
Francesco Giuseppe Baldassare Morlacchi (14 June 1784 – 28 October 1841) was an Italian composer of more than twenty operas. During the many years he spent as the royal Royal Kapellmeister in Dresden, he was instrumental in popularizing the Italian style of opera. Biography Born in Perugia, Morlacchi was from a family of musicians. He composed from a very young age, first studying with his uncle Giovanni Mazzetti and later with Luigi Caruso in Perugia. He later studied at Loreto with Zingarelli (1803-4). Finally, he ended up in Bologna at the school of Stanislao Mattei (1805) where he met Gioacchino Rossini. Morlacchi was quickly successful as an opera composer. His first operatic works were written in 1807, and were a ''farce'' and a comic opera. His first truly effective theatre work was the ''opera seria'' ''Corradino'' (Parma, 1808), and led to commissions from opera houses in Rome and Milan. Born in Milan in 1936, Morlacchi studied at the Accademia dei Filodrammatici and made her theatrical debut in 1956 in the comedy play ''Il maggiore Barbara'', with the stage company of Ernesto Calindri and Lina Volonghi. On stage she worked with notable directors such as Luchino Visconti and Sergio Castellitto. Morlachs
Morlachs ( sh-Latn-Cyrl, Morlaci, Морлаци or , ; it, Morlacchi; ro, Morlaci) has been an exonym used for a rural Christian community in Herzegovina, Lika and the Dalmatian Hinterland. The term was initially used for a bilingual Vlach pastoralist community in the mountains of Croatia in the second half of the 14th until the early 16th century. Then, when the community straddled the Venetian– Ottoman border until in the 17th century, it only referred to Slavic-speaking, mainly Eastern Orthodox but also Roman Catholic people. The Vlach i.e. Morlach population of Herzegovina and Dalmatian hinterland from the Venetian and Turkish side were of either Roman Catholic or Christian Orthodox faith. Venetian sources from 17th and 18th century make no distinction between Orthodox and Catholics, they refer to both groupings as Morlachs. Teatro Morlacchi
Teatro Morlacchi, formerly Teatro del Verzaro, is the largest theater of Perugia. It is named after the musician Francesco Morlacchi. History In 1777 the local middle class decided to build a new theater in response to the nobles who had built the Teatro del Pavone; ninety families then formed the "Society for the construction of a new theater", which bought an old convent and commissioned the project to architect Alessio Lorenzini. Lorenzini gave the hall the classic shape of a horseshoe and facing with the problem of limited space, having to reserve a box for each client family, he decided to set up the entire structure diagonally and to reduce the Lobby (room), entrance hall.
