Moritz Ellinger
Moritz Ellinger (October 17, 1830 – August 27, 1907) was a Kingdom of Bavaria-born Jewish-American journalist and city official. Life Ellinger was born on October 17, 1830, in Fürth, Kingdom of Bavaria, the son of Jacob Hirsch Ellinger and Jochabed Fegersheim. He was educated at the Fürth Orphan Asylum and spent two years studying at the Würzburg Yeshiva under Seligman Baer Bamberger. Ellinger immigrated to America in 1854 and initially worked in the importation of rare books. He then entered political life, running as a Republican against Fernando Wood in the strongly Democratic New York's 9th congressional district in the 1870 United States House of Representatives election. He lost the election to Wood and came in third place. From 1873 to 1876, he served as apportionment clerk in the New York City Department of Finance. Kingdom Of Bavaria
The Kingdom of Bavaria (german: Königreich Bayern; ; spelled ''Baiern'' until 1825) was a German state that succeeded the former Electorate of Bavaria in 1805 and continued to exist until 1918. With the unification of Germany into the German Empire in 1871, the kingdom became a federated state of the new empire and was second in size, power, and wealth only to the leading state, the Kingdom of Prussia. The polity's foundation dates back to the ascension of prince-elector Maximilian IV Joseph of the House of Wittelsbach as King of Bavaria in 1805. Ridgewood, Queens
Ridgewood is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It borders the neighborhoods of Maspeth, Middle Village and Glendale, as well as the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bushwick and East Williamsburg. Historically, the neighborhood straddled the Queens-Brooklyn boundary. The etymology of Ridgewood's name is disputed, but it may have referred to Ridgewood Reservoir, the local geography, or a road. The British settled Ridgewood in the 17th century, while the Dutch settled nearby Bushwick. The adjacent settlements led to decades of disputes over the boundary, which later became the border between Queens and Brooklyn. Bushwick was developed rapidly in the 19th century, but Ridgewood remained sparsely populated until the early 20th century, when rowhouses were built for its rapidly growing, predominantly German population.
