Morikami Park is a park in Palm Beach County, Florida. The park is named for George Morikami, a Japanese immigrant to Florida who donated the land for the park to the county. Palm Beach County is a county located in the southeastern part of Florida and lies directly north of Broward County and Miami-Dade County. The county had a population of 1,492,191 as of the 2020 census, making it the third-most populous county in the state of Florida and the 26th-most populous county in the United States. George Morikami
Sukeji "George" Morikami (November 4, 1886 – February 29, 1976) was a Japanese immigrant to the United States who farmed in Palm Beach County, Florida, for more than 65 years. He donated his 200 acres (80 hectares) of farm land to Palm Beach County in 1973. Morikami was born in Miyazu, Kyoto, Japan. He was 19 years old when he immigrated to the United States on May 3, 1906, to join the Yamato Colony, a Japanese farming community in what is now Boca Raton, Florida. He paid $150 and was indentured for three years in return for his passage to America and spending money. He was to receive $500 and some land at the end of the three years. He intended to take the money and return to Japan. However, Morikami's sponsor died in 1906, and he did not receive any cash or land, and was unable to return to Japan. Morikami Museum And Japanese Gardens
The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is a center for Japanese arts and culture located west of Delray Beach in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The campus includes two museum buildings, the Roji-en Japanese Gardens: Garden of the Drops of Dew, a bonsai garden, library, gift shop, and a Japanese restaurant, called the Cornell Cafe, which has been featured on the Food Network and Vizcaya Television. Rotating exhibits are displayed in both buildings, and demonstrations, including tea ceremonies and classes, are held in the main building. Traditional Japanese festivals are celebrated several times a year. The park and museum are named after George Morikami, a native of Miyazu, Japan, who donated his farm to Palm Beach County to be used as a park. American Orchid Society Visitor Center And Botanical Garden
The American Orchid Society Visitors Center and Botanical Garden was a botanical garden specializing in orchids and home to the American Orchid Society. The facility was located in Morikami Park at 16700 AOS Lane, Delray Beach, Florida, United States, and included a 4,000 square foot (370 m2) greenhouse open to the public. The visitor center was a Mediterranean style building that was designed by Song Associates of West Palm Beach, Florida. There were of gardens with a design adapted from work by students at the University of Florida's Department of Landscape Architecture by Connie Roy-Fisher Landscape Architects of Jupiter, Florida. In late 2011 the American Orchid Society sold the visitor center and garden and in 2012 moved the orchid collection to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in the Miami metropolitan area. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is an botanic garden with extensive collections of rare tropical plants including palms, cycads, flowering trees, and vines. It is located in the city of Coral Gables, Miami-Dade County, just south of Miami, surrounded at the north and west by Matheson Hammock Park. Fairchild opened to the public in 1938. Fairchild is a museum, laboratory, learning center, and conservation research facility whose main role is preserving biodiversity. It has 45,000 members and more than 1,200 volunteers.
