Morgan House (Central, South Carolina)
Morgan House is a historic home located Central, Pickens County, South Carolina. It was built in 1893 in the Queen Anne, and modified about 1917 with Classical Revival style changes. It is a -story frame dwelling and features a porch with Doric order columns. It is associated with the Morgan family, who operated a mercantile retail establishment and founders of the Bank of Central. The house now serves as the home of the Central History Museum, which is operated by the Central Heritage Society. Central is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,159, roughly 3,000 of whom were considered permanent residents. Contrary to its name, it is not near South Carolina's center. It received its name from being halfway or the central point between Atlanta and Charlotte along the former Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway line. Southern Wesleyan University's main campus is east of downtown Central. History Central was founded by the Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Company in a railroad boom that began in 1873. Pickens County is located in the northwest part of the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 131,404. Its county seat is Pickens. The county was created in 1826. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson- Mauldin, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Pickens County was part of Cherokee homeland territory until well after the American Revolution. The Cherokee had allied with the British, hoping to gain expulsion of European-American settlers from their lands. Doric Order
The Doric order was one of the three orders of ancient Greek and later Roman architecture; the other two canonical orders were the Ionic and the Corinthian. The Doric is most easily recognized by the simple circular capitals at the top of columns.
