Moremi, Botswana
Moremi is a village in the Central District of Botswana, about east of Palapye. The village lies in a bend of the Lotsane River, a seasonal tributary of the Limpopo River. It lies just north of the dramatic Tswapong Hills. The Moremi-Mannonye Community Trust charges an entrance fee to the Moremi Gorge heritage site, an area where perennial streams have cut deep gorges into the hills, with waterfalls cascading into deep pools surrounded by lush vegetation. The gorges are home to many birds that feeds on the fish and small crabs in the pools, and are breeding grounds for the endangered Cape vulture. Leopard, hyena and kudu live in the hills, and the cliffs above the gorge harbour baboons, rock rabbits and dassies. The Botswana Tourism Organization is building a bridge for motor vehicles across the Lotsane River, and is building tourist accommodations and nature trails in the Moremi - Mannonye Conservation Area. Moremi Game Reserve
Moremi Game Reserve is a protected area in Botswana. It lies on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta and was named after Chief Moremi of the BaTawana tribe. Moremi was designated as a game reserve, rather than a national park, when it was created. This designation meant that the BaSarwa or Bushmen that lived there were allowed to stay in the reserve. Location and setting Moremi Game Reserve is just under in extent, covering much of the eastern side of the Okavango Delta and combining permanent water with drier areas, which create some startling and unexpected contrasts. Some prominent geographical features of the Reserve are Chiefs Island and the Moremi Tongue. In the Moremi Reserve one can experience excellent views of savannah game as well as bird-watching on the lagoons. There are also thickly wooded areas, which are home to the Cape wild dog (''Lycaon pictus pictus'') and leopard. To the northeast lies the Chobe National Park which borders the Moremi Game Reserve. Moremi Ajasoro ( Yoruba: ''Mọremí Àjàṣorò'') was a legendary Yoruba queen and folk heroine in the Yorubaland region of present-day southwestern Nigeria who is fabled to have assisted in the liberation of the Yoruba kingdom of Ife from the neighbouring Ugbo Kingdom. Moremi was married to Oranmiyan, the son of Oduduwa, the first king of Ife. Biography The Ayaba (Queen Consort) Moremi lived in the 12th century, hailed from Offa, and was married to Oranmiyan, the heir to the king of Ife and son of the founding father of the Yoruba people, Oduduwa Ile-Ife was a kingdom that was said to have been at war with an adjoining tribe who were known to them as the ''Forest people''. (Ugbò in the Yoruba language, though the said tribe is believed by scholars to have had no relation to the contemporary Ugbòs of modern Nigeria).
