Moranbah is a coal mining town and locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Moranbah had a population of 8,735 people. In addition to the permanent population, Moranbah also has a large fly-in fly-out population in excess of 1500 who work in Moranbah's mines. Geography The Peak Downs Highway between Mackay and Clermont passes through the south of the locality; the town is north of the highway via the Moranbah Access Road. Moranbah Airport is also on the Moranbah Access Road, by road of the town (). Moranbah North Coal Mine
The Moranbah North Coal Mine is a coal mine in the Bowen Basin at Moranbah in Central Queensland, Australia. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 261 million tonnes of coking coal, one of the largest coal reserves in the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 8 million tonnes of coal. Most of the coal is exported and used to produce iron and steel in Asia but also to India, Brazil and Europe via the Goonyella railway line to Hay Point. The longwall mining operations at the mine began in 1998. Extraction occurs roughly 200 metres below the surface. Operations are expected to continue until around 2033. The mine is owned by Anglo American Australia and several joint partners. Methane gas extracted from the mine powers the Moranbah North Power Station. Moranbah Airport
Moranbah Airport is an airport serving Moranbah, Queensland, Australia. It is located south of Moranbah and operated by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, a coal mining company. The airport averages 40 QantasLink flights each week, most of these being Dash-8 Q400 aircraft. In July 2012, Virgin Australia commenced charter flight operations using Skywest ATR-72 aircraft. At one point, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VA) offered three daily return flights on weekdays and one on Sundays using ATR 72 aircraft, however with the withdrawal of their ATR aircraft from Queensland, the airline has now ceased operating into the airport. In 2010, to accommodate the growth and demand for more flights, BMA provided $47 million in funding to upgrade the runway and build a new terminal. Coppabella is a rural locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. It was established by Queensland Railways to accommodate train crew and railway maintenance staff. In the , Coppabella had a population of 466 people. Geography Coppabella is in the Galilee Basin mining area. The Peak Downs Highway passes through the locality from north-east to south-west. Peak Downs Mine
Peak Downs Mine is a large open cut coking coal mine in Queensland located 31 km SSE of Moranbah. Peak Downs is one of seven mines in Bowen Basin owned by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, Australia's largest coal miner and exporter. Production at Peak Downs started in 1972. The Caval Ridge Coal Mine, which will be located adjacent to Peak Downs, will begin construction in 2011 and begin exporting by 2014. It is expected to process 2.5 million tons of coal each year from Peak Downs. Goonyella Riverside Mine
Goonyella Riverside Mine is a large open cut coking coal mine in the Bowen Basin. It is one of many coal mines in Central Queensland, Australia and is located at Moranbah about 30 km north of the township. The mine produced 12.4 million tonnes of metallurgical coal from July 2012 to June 2013. It is owned by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance. The Goonyella Upper Seam, the Goonyella Middle Seam and the Goonyella Lower Seam are all mined at the site. The coal is well known for its great coking characteristics. The Peak Downs Highway links the towns of Mackay and Clermont in the Australian state of Queensland. It represents the main link between Queensland's Whitsunday Coast and the Central West region of the state.
