The term Moor, derived from the ancient Mauri, is an exonym first used by Christian Europeans to designate the Muslim inhabitants of the Maghreb, the Iberian Peninsula, Sicily and Malta during the Middle Ages. Moors are not a distinct or self-defined people. The 1911 ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' observed that the term had "no real ethnological value." Europeans of the Middle Ages and the early modern period variously applied the name to Arabs and North African Berbers, as well as Muslim Europeans. Moorish Science Temple Of America
The Moorish Science Temple of America is an American national and religious organization founded by Noble Drew Ali (born as Timothy Drew) in the early twentieth century. He based it on the premise that African Americans are descendants of the Moabites and thus are "Moorish" (sometimes also spelled "Muurish" by adherents) by nationality, and Islamic by faith. Ali put together elements of major traditions to develop a message of personal transformation through historical education, racial pride and spiritual uplift. His doctrine was also intended to provide African Americans with a sense of identity in the world and to promote civic involvement. Sri Lankan Moor
Sri Lankan Moors ( ta, இலங்கைச் சோனகர், translit=Ilaṅkaic Cōṉakar; si, ලංකා යෝනක, translit=Lanka Yonaka; formerly Ceylon Moors; colloquially referred to as Sri Lankan Muslims) are an ethnic minority group in Sri Lanka, comprising 9.2% of the country's total population. Most of them are native speakers of the Tamil language who also speak Sinhalese as a second language. They are predominantly followers of Islam. The Sri Lankan Muslim community is divided as Sri Lankan Moors, Indian Moors and Sri Lankan Malays depending on their history and traditions. Drew Moor (born January 15, 1984) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a center-back in Major League Soccer. Born in Dallas, Moor began playing college soccer for the Furman Paladins before transferring to the Indiana Hoosiers. After three seasons with the Hoosiers, and helping the side with the 2004 College Cup, Moor was drafted in the first round of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas with the 6th overall pick. He spent five seasons with FC Dallas, winning U.S. Open Cup titles, before being traded to the Colorado Rapids. Moorland
Moorland or moor is a type of habitat found in upland areas in temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands and montane grasslands and shrublands biomes, characterised by low-growing vegetation on acidic soils. Moorland, nowadays, generally means uncultivated hill land (such as Dartmoor in South West England), but also includes low-lying wetlands (such as Sedgemoor, also South West England). It is closely related to heath, although experts disagree on what precisely distinguishes these types of vegetation. Generally, moor refers to highland and high rainfall zones, whereas heath refers to lowland zones which are more likely to be the result of human activity. Paul Moor
Paul Moor (born 3 September 1978), of Kingston-upon-Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England is one of the world's leading ten-pin bowlers. He bowls on the European Bowling Tour (EBT) and has been a member of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) for several years. Early years Moor first started bowling at the age of 10 when he joined the Saturday morning Junior League at the AMF Bowling Centre in Hull. His parents were league bowlers at the centre which was the main influence for him taking up the sport. He enjoyed plenty of success in his latter years as a junior, winning many national titles. He also teamed up with fellow Hull Bowler, Robert Batty and won a multitude of Doubles Titles including victories at the BTBA Junior Nationals at both Senior and Graduate level. Henry Moor
Henry Moor (1809 – 12 May 1877) was a British lawyer and politician who served as the second Mayor of Melbourne, Australia and as Member of Parliament for Brighton in England. Early life Moor was born in Greenwich, Kent, England. He was Educated at Rev. Charles Parr Burney's school in the town. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn on 12 November 1831, and from 1832 until 1841 he had a legal partnership with John Simpson at Furnival's Inn, London. Melbourne 1842–1854 In 1842 Moor emigrated to Australia, arriving in Melbourne in February. He continued his legal work, initially as a conveyancer, before being admitted as attorney, solicitor and proctor in the Supreme Court of New South Wales in April 1843. Davey Ray Moor (born David Raymond Moore, Beirut) is an England-based songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer. Biography Davey Ray Moor was born as David Raymond Moore in Beirut, his father was an accountant for the United Nations. As a teen he had asthma attacks and was confined indoors where he learned to play the piano by playing along to Elton John and David Bowie. He was raised in Canberra and Sydney. In Canberra he had attended Copland College alongside Russell Kilbey and Charles Ratcliffe. David Moor
David Moor (1947–2000) was a British general practitioner who was prosecuted in 1999 for the euthanasia of a patient. He was found not guilty but admitted in a press interview to having helped up to 300 people to die. He was the first doctor in Britain to be tried solely for the mercy killing of a patient. Career Moor worked as a GP in Stamfordham, Northumberland, but retired just before his trial in 1999. George Raymond Dallas Moor, (22 October 1896 – 3 November 1918) was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for stemming a rout by shooting four soldiers during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.
