The Monumento Rodoviário da Rodovia Presidente Dutra is a monument and former rest area on the Rodovia Presidente Dutra section of the BR-116, at Kilometer 226 of the Serra do Mar, Serra das Araras in Piraí, Rio de Janeiro (state), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Construction Construction of the monument started on 18 May 1926, with the foundation stone laid in 1928 by Washington Luiz, and it was inaugurated on 13 May 1938. It was created as a highway rest area and tourist observation point, and had a large restaurant and leisure area. It comprises of construction adjacent to the highway, with a garden area including a pond, and an art deco building, tall, with two floors under a tall tower that has an aerial lighthouse at the top. Volta Redonda () is the name of a Municipalities of Brazil, municipality in the Rio de Janeiro (state), Rio de Janeiro state of Brazil with an area of 182.81 km2, located from 350m to 707m above the sea level (22°31'23" S, 44°06'15" W) and with a population of 273,988 inhabitants (estimated in 2020). Relief is a sculptural method in which the sculpted pieces are bonded to a solid background of the same material. The term ''relief'' is from the Latin verb ''relevo'', to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. When a relief is carved into a flat surface of stone (relief sculpture) or wood (relief carving), the field is actually lowered, leaving the unsculpted areas seeming higher. The approach requires a lot of chiselling away of the background, which takes a long time. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject, and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one of a standing figure where the ankles are a potential weak point, particularly in stone.
