Montoya Ranch
Montoya Ranch was a ranch in Farisita, Huerfano County, Colorado, United States, along the Huerfano River. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The ranch house was built in or after 1867 with Spanish Colonial and territorial architectural elements. At that time, there were many New Mexicans moving to Colorado, and many ranched and farmed in the Huerfano valley. History In 1874, Juliana and Victor Montoya ran a sheep ranch at the property. They are the namesakes for the ranch and may have also ran a store beginning in the 1870s. The adobe ranch house is the only building in New Mexico or Colorado to have a full adobe basement. The house appears to have been made fort-like. It was large with two-foot thick adobe walls and the large basement. There were also an underground ice house, sheep pens, and irrigation ditches. Farisita, Colorado
Farisita is an unincorporated community in Huerfano County, Colorado, United States. History Fort Talpa Fort Talpa, a Spanish adobe post, was built in the 1820s as a means of protection from possible attacks by Native Americans. In the 1870s, the fort was included as part of the town of Huerfano Cañon. In 1941, it was still standing next to the newer town of Farisita's general store. A post office called Farisita was established in 1923, and remained in operation until 1990. An early postmaster named the town for his daughter, Jeanette "Farisita" Faris, the nickname being Spanish for little Faris girl. Jeanette would later go on to run the post office and store herself. The Faris family cemetery is located at the town site, and has been in constant use since its creation, with Faris family members buried there as recently as 2010. Huerfano County (; ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the population was 6,820. The county seat is Walsenburg, Colorado, Walsenburg. The county, whose name comes from the Spanish language, Spanish ''huérfano'' meaning "orphan", was named for the Huerfano Butte, a local landmark. The area of Huerfano County boomed early in the 1900s with the discovery of large coal deposits. After large scale World War II coal demand ended in the 1940s Walsenburg and Huerfano saw a steady economic decline through 2015.
