Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler
Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler, (19 May 1873 – 7 November 1952) was Governor of the Central Provinces of British India (1925–33), Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man (1933–37), and Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge (1937–48). Career Born at Julian Hill, a grade II listed building in Harrow, London, to Spencer Percival Butler and Mary Kendall, Butler was educated at Haileybury and Pembroke College, Cambridge. He graduated with a double first, having also been President of the Cambridge Union Society in Easter (summer) Term 1895. He became a Fellow of Pembroke in 1895 and entered the Indian Civil Service in 1896, having come top in the entrance exam. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire in 1909. The Punjab Legislative Council was the legislature of the province of Punjab in British India. Established by British authorities under Government of India Act 1919, the council had nominal powers and a membership of mainly pro-British politicians and government officials. Voting was largely boycotted until the Government of India Act 1935 increased representation and the powers of the assembly. The First World War gave the momentum to the growing demand for self-government in British India.
