Monroe County is a County (United States), county located in the south central part of the U.S. state of Iowa. In the early 20th century, it was a center of bituminous coal mining and in 1910 had a population of more than 25,000. As mining declined, people moved elsewhere for work. In the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 7,577. The county seat is Albia, Iowa, Albia. Monroe County Courthouse (Iowa)
The Monroe County Courthouse in Albia, Iowa, United States, was built in 1903. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource. In 1985 it was listed as a contributing property in the Albia Square and Central Commercial Historic District. The courthouse is the third building the county has used for court functions and county administration. History Monroe County, Iowa, Monroe County was originally called Kishkekosh County, and its first courthouse was a log structure built in 1846. It featured a half-story sized room above the courtroom for jury deliberations. It was torn down in 1860 and replaced by a Tudor Revival architecture, Tudor Revival-style building in the town park. Iowa Highway 137 (Iowa 137) is a state highway in southern Iowa. The route begins at Iowa 5 in Albia and ends at U.S. Highway 63 (US 63) and Iowa 163 in Eddyville. The highway was designated in the 1930s after US 63 was rerouted. Route description Iowa 137 begins at a Y intersection with Iowa 5 on the north side of Albia. From Albia, it travels north for before turning northeast towards Eddyville. Just south of Eddyville, the highway crosses the Des Moines River. The highway ends at an interchange with US 63 and Iowa 163 on Eddyville's southeast corner. History Iowa 137 was designated in 1934 to replace a segment of Iowa 59 that was not subsumed into US 63. Lovilia, Iowa
Lovilia is a city in Monroe County, Iowa, Monroe County, Iowa, United States. The population was 472 at the time of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. History Lovilla was laid out in 1853. Coal was known north and south of Lovilia in the early 1900s, and there were scattered "country mines" in the area. On March 30, 1953, there was a dust explosion at the O'Brien Mine, a coal mine near Lovilia. Two men, including the mine foreman, were in the mine to fire the black-powder shots at the end of the work shift. Both were killed in the blast. Volunteers from Lovilia went into the mine and brought out the bodies, and then the owner of the O'Brien mine, along with three officials of a nearby mine and an employee went underground to investigate. Appanoose County, Iowa
Appanoose County is a county in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,317. Its county seat is Centerville. History Appanoose County was formed on February 17, 1843, from open territory. It was named for the Meskwaki Chief Appanoose, who did not engage in war against Black Hawk, advocating peace. The present county seat was formerly called Chaldea, and was later renamed to Senterville in honor of Congressman William Tandy Senter of Tennessee. In April 1848, the courthouse, constructed at the expense of $160, was put into use and served as such until 1857. The second courthouse was opened in 1864, and was burned down to the first floor during an explosive Fourth of July fireworks demonstration.
