Monocoupe Model 22
The Central States Aircraft Model 22, Velie Monocoupe, or Monocoupe Model 22 was the first in a series of small, high-performance high-wing monoplanes from Monocoupe Aircraft. Development The Monocooupe model 22 was drawn up by Clayton Folkerts to Luscome's design criteria. Design The Model 22 was a high-wing conventional geared aircraft with side by side seating. The prototype was powered by a 60 hp Detroit air-cat engine. Some were installed with Anzani engines. Operational history The prototype monocoupe was first flown on 1 April 1927. The certified version of the Model 22 was approved in January 1928. Clayton Folkerts
Clayton Folkerts (1897–1964) was an American aircraft designer. Early life Self-taught in aircraft design, Clayton built five aircraft at his family farm between 1916 and 1926, including a Henderson powered high-wing. Folkerts worked for Central States Aero in Davenport, Iowa designing and building the prototype Monocoupe Model 22 in four months for Donald Arthur Luscombe. The Monocoupe would go on to become a popular racing aircraft of the 1920s and 1930s. By the end of 1928, 90% of all light planes and 10% of all licensed airplanes owned in the U.S. were Monocoupes, which remained in production until 1950. Folkerts designed a series of winning air racers, the Folkerts SK-1, Folkerts SK-2, and Folkerts SK-3 that won at the National Air Races. Donald Arthur Luscombe
Donald Arthur Luscombe (May 25, 1895 – January 10, 1965) was an American businessman and entrepreneur. He is best known as the founder of Luscombe Aircraft, which produced an advanced sheet-metal-fuselage light aircraft during the 1930–1950 time period in the US. Biography Luscombe was born on May 25, 1895, in Iowa City, Iowa. When the US entered World War I, he volunteered for duty in France, where he served as an ambulance driver. He received a citation for valor for this service. After returning home, Luscombe married. He and his wife Eleanor had a girl on 9 February 1922, but she died 19 days later (28 February 1922). A second child, a boy named James True Luscombe, was born on 4 August 1927. James was the founder of Luscombe Engineering Company (1954–present); he died on May 8, 1984 and is survived by James H. Jerome Lederer
Jerome F. Lederer (September 26, 1902 – February 6, 2004) was an American aviation-safety pioneer, known as "Mr. Aviation Safety." He was born in New York City. He received a BSC in mechanical engineering with aeronautical options in 1924 and an M.E. in 1925 from New York University. In 1926, he was hired by the United States Postal Service to oversee its plane maintenance. Lederer helped reduce pilot fatality by devising film crash tests and redesigning the exhaust stacks and other systems. From 1929 to 1940, he served as chief engineer for aviation insurance underwriters. In 1940, he accepted an appointment as director of the Civil Aeronautics Board's Safety Bureau. He resigned in 1942 to become director of the Airlines War Training Institute. The Velie Monocoupe was an American general aviation aircraft manufactured from 1927 to 1929 by the Mono-Aircraft Corp, a division of Velie Motors Corporation (founded by Willard L.
