Monilea
''Monilea'' is a genus of sea snails in the family (biology), family Trochidae, the top snails. Description The solid shell has a depressed-conical shape. The outer surface is sharply, spirally striate and closely obliquely striated . The shell has a more or less developed callous ridge or funicle revolving on the inner side of the whorl within the Umbilicus (mollusc), umbilicus, and terminating at the Columella (gastropod), columella, the edge of which is reflexed over it. The sinuous columella terminates in a point or denticle at its base. The outer lip is lirate within. Distribution The habitat of most species is in the Indian Ocean, but some occur in the Pacific Ocean. Species Species within the genus ''Monilea'' include: * ''Monilea belcheri'' (Philippi, 1849) * ''Monilea callifera'' (Lamarck, 1822), the type species * ''Monilea carmesina'' (Webster G.H., 1908) * ''Monilea chiliarches'' Melvill, 1910 * ''Monilea cocoa'' Okutani, 2001 * ''Monilea discerna'' (Iredale, 1937): ...

The Australian Faunal Directory recognizes '' Monilea lentiginosa'' Adams, 1853 as a synonym of ''Monilea callifera''. Description The size of an adult shell varies between 12 mm and 24 mm. The lusterless conoidal shell is narrowly umbilicate, more or less depressed, strong and solid. Its color is whitish or yellowish, with radiating maculations or stripes above; the base unicolored or obliquely striped with the stripes often interrupted. The conoidal spire has an acute, corneous apex. The sutures are impressed. There are about six convex whorls, the last one rounded at the periphery but often with a tendency to be biangulate there. The sculpture is densely finely lirate all over. The lirae are very closely and finely beaded by the oblique incremental striae which are prominent in the interliral spaces. The oblique aper ...
