Money Island (Branford, Connecticut)
Money Island is one of the Thimble Islands off Stony Creek, a section of Branford, Connecticut. It is named after a legend that Captain Kidd buried his treasure there. The island, 12 acres (49,000 m2) in size, bears an entire village of 32 houses, a post office, and one library. Former buildings included a school, a church, and a grocery store. There are three roads and several piers. At this time, none of the houses are occupied year-round. The three roads are Montowese Avenue, Pequot Avenue, and Kidd's Lane. Money Island is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) that is the smallest and most remote of five rural communities that make up Downe Township in Cumberland County in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The road that led to the development of Money Island was constructed in the late 1930s. In the 1940s, the first homes were constructed in the community. The community is located on the shore of the Delaware Bay on the southern side of Nantuxent Creek. Its location may be described as the southwest corner of New Jersey. Money Island is a low-income community which has been devastated by sea level rise and Hurricane Sandy. Local opinions have been divided regarding participation in the Blue Acres buy-out program, part of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's process of managed retreat. Elsinboro Township is a township in Salem County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 1,001, a decrease of 35 (−3.4%) from the 2010 census count of 1,036, which in turn reflected a decline of 56 (−5.1%) from the 1,092 counted in the 2000 census. Elsinboro's first mention dates back to May 12, 1701, though it was also mentioned in records on November 28, 1676. The details and date of its original incorporation are unknown.
