The suburb is named after General Sir John Monash, (1865 to 1931), who commanded the Australian Army in France in the First World War. It was gazetted on 1 August 1975 and first settled in 1978. Monash is a town in the Riverland area of South Australia. It is on the Sturt Highway between Barmera and Renmark. At the 2006 census, Monash had a population of 1,115. Monash was proclaimed in 1921 and is named after General Sir John Monash, a World War I army commander. The primary industry is irrigated horticulture and viticulture. John Monash
General Sir John Monash, (; 27 June 1865 – 8 October 1931) was an Australian civil engineer and military commander of the First World War. He commanded the 13th Infantry Brigade before the war and then, shortly after its outbreak, became commander of the 4th Brigade in Egypt, with whom he took part in the Gallipoli campaign. In July 1916 he took charge of the newly raised 3rd Division in northwestern France and in May 1918 became commander of the Australian Corps, at the time the largest corps on the Western Front.
