Mona Lisa Yuchengco
Mona Lisa Yuchengco is a Filipino-American community activist, publisher and filmmaker. She was born in Manila, Philippines and moved to San Francisco in 1982 with her two sons. Yuchengco graduated from Assumption College with degrees in Liberal Arts and Education and earned a master's degree in Business Administration from Ateneo University. In 1992 Yuchengco founded ''Filipinas'', a magazine specifically directed toward the Filipino American community. The magazine, in its prime, covered various topics such as the lack of compensation of Filipino Veterans in World War II, domestic violence and Filipino identity. Yuchengco sold ''Filipinas'' in 2005 and it dropped its print version in 2010, existing solely online thereafter. In late 2012 Yuchengco started a new magazine, ''Positively Filipino'', that was solely available on the internet. Filipino Americans ( fil, Mga Pilipinong Amerikano) are Americans of Filipino ancestry. Filipinos and other Asian ethnicities in North America were first documented in the 16th century as slaves and prisoners on ships sailing to and from New Spain (Mexico) and a handful of inhabitants in other minute settlements during the time Louisiana was an administrative district of the Viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico). Mass migration did not begin until the 20th century, when the Philippines was a U.S. territory. ''Filipinas'' was a monthly magazine that catered to the Filipino American community. The magazine's inception was in 1992 and it became a nationally-distributed magazine that served Filipinos in the United States. It covered many aspects of the Filipino diaspora, particularly on Philippine heroes, leaders and achievers, culture, history, travel, food and entertainment. It provided a calendar of Filipino events in the coming months. The magazine had been under much financial pressure since the economic downturn in the U.S. in 2007 and constantly struggled after that, according to the editor's column in the magazine. While it still had much advertising, apparently the downturn caused many advertisers to drop their number of ads. ''Positively Filipino'' got its start when Mona Lisa Yuchengco, the founder of ''Filipinas'' magazine, decided to try another publishing venture after selling ''Filipinas''. She joined with a number of former writers and editors from ''Filipinas'', which she sold in 2005. This venture was designed to be an online venture, since print magazines had been declining in popularity for years. Marilou Diaz-Abaya
Marilou Correa Diaz-Abaya (March 30, 1955 – October 8, 2012) was a Filipina multi-award winning film director. She was conferred the Order of National Artists of the Philippines for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022, she was the founder and president of the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute and Arts Center, a film school based in Antipolo, Philippines. She was the director of the 1998 film ''José Rizal'', a biographical film on the Philippines' national hero. She was part of the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema. The Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) was founded in 1980. The San Francisco-based organization, formerly known as the National Asian American Telecommunications Association (NAATA), has grown into the largest organization dedicated to the advancement of Asian Americans in independent media, specifically the areas of television and filmmaking. Alfonso Yuchengco (; February 6, 1923 – April 15, 2017) was a Filipino accountant, industrialist, businessman, educator, and diplomat.
