Momoko Iko
Momoko Iko (1940–2020) was a Japanese-American playwright, best known for her 1972 play ''Gold Watch''. She was also a founding member of the Asian Liberation Organization and the Pacific Asian American Women Writers West. Life Momoko Iko was born to Kyokuo and Natsuko (Kagawa) Iko on March 30, 1940 in Wapato, Washington. She was the youngest of six children, two older brothers (Tets and Kei) and three older sisters (Yae, Mina, and Sono. After the start of World War II, Iko was incarcerated, aged two, at the Portland Assembly Center before being transferred to the Heart Mountain Relocation Center following the signing of Executive Order 9066. Her family were the last to leave the camp in 1945, as they did not know where to go. The family initially worked as migrant farm workers in New Jersey before settling in Chicago. Wapato, Washington
Wapato is a town in Yakima County, Washington, Yakima County, Washington (state), Washington, United States. The population was 4,607 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. It has a Hispanic majority. History Origins The town was founded in 1885 by Indian Postmaster Alexander McCredy as a railroad stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad as Simcoe, Washington. The Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 allowed the government to subdivide the Yakama Indian Reservation tribal communal landholdings into allotments for Native American heads of families and individuals. The selling of these allotments drew settlers into the area. With the construction of the Irwin Canal in 1896, agriculture became the big business in town. In the early 1900s, McCredy and George Rankin established the Wapato Development Company and laid out the town site. They established the town's first bank and began selling lots. ''Aiiieeeee! An Anthology of Asian-American Writers'' is a 1974 anthology by Frank Chin, Jeffery Paul Chan, Lawson Fusao Inada, and Shawn Wong, members of the Combined Asian American Resources Project (CARP). It helped establish Asian American Literature as a field by recovering and collecting representative selections from Chinese-, Japanese-, and Filipino-Americans from the past fifty years—many of whom had been mostly forgotten. This pan-Asian anthology included selections from Carlos Bulosan, Diana Chang, Louis Chu, Momoko Iko, Wallace Lin, Toshio Mori, John Okada, Oscar Peñaranda, Sam Tagatac, Hisaye Yamamoto, Wakako Yamauchi, many of whom are now staples in Asian American literature courses.
