Momenta Art
Momenta Art was an artist-run, not-for-profit organization and gallery, which from its founding in 1986Fensterstock, Ann. Art on the Block : Tracking the New York Art World from Soho to the Bowery, Bushwick and Beyond. First edition. New York, NY: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013. to its closing in 2016, exhibited and promoted emerging artists and underrepresented artistic perspectives. Artists who received support from Momenta Art include Simone Leigh, Chitra Ganesh, Elana Herzog and Mark Tribe. Origins Momenta Art was founded in 1986 by a group of five artists in Philadelphia- Timothy Aubry, Donna Czapiga, Eric Heist, Christina LaSala, and James Mills. Simone Leigh
Simone Leigh (born 1967) is an American artist from Chicago who works in New York City in the United States. She works in various media including sculpture, installations, video, performance, and social practice. Marlene McCarty
Marlene McCarty is a multidisciplinary artist and activist based in New York. She was a member of the AIDS collective Gran Fury and co-founded the trans-disciplinary design studio Bureau. Using everyday materials including graphite, ballpoint pen, and highlighter, McCarty creates mural-sized drawings related to issues ranging from sexual and social formation, gender and power, to parricide and infanticide. Sandra Eileen Gering (born Marks 1942) is an American gallerist, curator, and art dealer specializing in modern and contemporary art. She owned and operated commercial galleries in New York City. She is a proponent of conceptual art and interdisciplinary practices. Lily van der Stokker (born 1954) is a Dutch visual artist. She is known for her colorful site-specific painted installations incorporating words and decorative motifs that reference social realities and power dynamics. Pat Lasch
Pat Lasch (born 1944) is an American conceptual artist, painter, and sculptor. Born in New York City, Lasch received her bachelor's degree from Queens College of the City University of New York. Throughout her career she has shown work in exhibitions throughout the United States. Her father was a pastry chef born in Germany, and many of her works feature cakes as a response to his career. Part of the first generation of feminist artists to gain prominence, she is noted for her sculptures which depict ordinary objects, such as ball gowns crafted from dried acrylic paint, created from unusual materials. A 1988 bronze sculpture by Lasch, ''Self-Portrait: Renaissance Woman and Her Lover'', is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Janet Henry
Janet Henry is a visual artist based in New York City. Early life and education Henry was raised in East Harlem and then in Jamaica, Queens, where she currently lives. Henry attended the School of Visual Arts and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
