Molly Barker
Molly Barker (born in 1960) is an American educator, triathlete and social visionary. She is best known as the founder of Girls on the Run. Personal life and Education Barker was born in 1960 as Mary Wilmer in Charlotte, North Carolina to Mary van der Voort Wilmer and Henry "Hank" Bond Wilmer. Barker has one brother and three sisters. Her sister, Helen Nance is the founder of Gray Stone Day School in Misenheimer, NC. Her mother, Mary van der Voort Wilmer (1923-2002) was well regarded in the area of addiction recovery and treatment, and is one of the women profiled in "Women Coming out of the Shadows", sharing her story of addiction and recovery. Her father, Hank Wilmer was active in Charlotte, NC, serving as Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Republican party. Girls On The Run
Girls on the Run (also referred to as Girls on the Run International), a national non-profit organization, designs programming that strengthens third- to eighth grade girls’ social, emotional, physical and behavioral skills to successfully navigate life experiences. The program’s intentional curriculum places an emphasis on developing competence, confidence, connection, character, caring, and contribution in young girls through lessons that incorporate running and other physical activities. The life skills curriculum is delivered by caring and competent coaches who are trained to teach lessons as intended. Gray Stone Day School
Gray Stone Day School in Misenheimer, North Carolina, named for Gray Stone Inn in Misenheimer, opened in Fall 2002, is a charter high school and middle school. Previously located in Pfeiffer University's Harris Building, its philosophy has been "what better way to prepare for college than on a college campus". Gray Stone began planning for its own facility in 2005. Pfeiffer donated 18 acres of land and groundbreaking took place in April 2010. On January 4, 2011, Gray Stone students moved into a new $7 million, building. In 2012 the school opened a new wing of classrooms to accommodate the largest freshman class in school history. The first students graduated in 2005, and over 96 percent of graduates have gone to college. 440 students from seven counties attend the high school as of 2016, about half of those coming from Stanly County and a fourth from Rowan County.
