Molloy College Faculty
Molloy or O'Molloy is an Irish surname, anglicised from Ó Maolmhuaidh, maolmhuadh meaning 'Proud Chieftain'. (See also Malloy.) They were part of the southern Uí Néill, the southern branch of the large tribal grouping claiming descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages, the fifth-century king who supposedly kidnapped St Patrick to Ireland. They held power over a large part of what is now Co Offaly, where the surname is still very common. A second family were the O Maoil Aodha, 'descendant of the devotee of (St) Aodh', from maol, literally 'bald', a reference to the distinctive tonsure sported by early Irish monks. As well as Molloy, this surname has also been anglicised as Mulloy, Malloy, Maloy, 'Miley' and 'Millea'. A formal Irish name consists of a given name and a surname. In the Irish language, surnames are generally patronymic in etymology but are no longer literal patronyms as, for example, most Icelandic names still are. The form of a surname varies according to whether its bearer is male or female, and in the case of a married woman, whether she chooses to adopt her husband's surname. An alternative traditional naming convention consists of the first name followed by a double patronym, usually with the father and grandfather's names. Francie Molloy
Francie Molloy ( ga, Proinsias Ó Maolmhuaidh; born 16 December 1950) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been the abstentionist Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Ulster since 2013. He was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Mid Ulster from 1998 to 2013. He first stood for Sinn Féin in Fermanagh and South Tyrone in the 1982 Assembly Elections, finishing sixth in the five-seat constituency. He was then elected to Dungannon council in 1985 representing the Torrent electoral area, centred on Coalisland. He retired from the council in 1989 but was re-elected in 1993. Molloy stood unsuccessfully for Sinn Féin in the 1994 European Parliament election. Michael Molloy (born 22 December 1940) is a British author and former newspaper editor and cartoonist. Biography Born in Hertfordshire, Molloy studied at Ealing Junior School and the Ealing School of Art before working at the '' Sunday Pictorial'' followed by the '' Daily Sketch'', where he began drawing cartoons. In 1962, he joined the ''Daily Mirror'', where he rose through the ranks until in 1975 he became editor. In 1985, Robert Maxwell appointed Molloy Editor-in-Chief of the ''Daily Mirror'', '' Sunday Mirror'' and ''The People'', where he introduced colour printing. From 1986 to 1988, he additionally edited the ''Sunday Mirror''. From 1985 to 1995, Molloy wrote seven crime fiction books set in England, four featuring Sarah Keane and three featuring Lewis Home. Michael Molloy (born 11 July 1966) is an Australian comedian, writer, producer, actor and television and radio presenter who has been active in radio, television, stand-up and film. He currently hosts ''The Front Bar'' on the Seven Network. Life and career Early years Molloy grew up in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) before moving to Melbourne in the 1980s. Matt Molloy
Matt Molloy (born 12 January 1947) is an Irish musician, from a region known for producing talented flautists. As a child, he began playing the flute and won the All-Ireland Flute Championship at nineteen. Considered one of the most brilliant Irish musicians, his style that adapts piping techniques to the flute has influenced many contemporary Irish flute players. During the 1970s, Molloy was a member of The Bothy Band and its successor, the re-founded Planxty. He joined The Chieftains in 1979, replacing Michael Tubridy. Leonard Greenham Star Molloy
Major Leonard Greenham Star Molloy (1861–1937) was an Irish medical doctor and politician. Molloy was born in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland, the son of Richard Molloy of Rathgar, Dublin. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin where he obtained his M.A., M.D. and D.Ph. He was commissioned surgeon lieutenant in the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry in 1901, and was appointed a lieutenant when he resigned his commission as a surgeon in July 1902. During World War I he served in France and Headquarters (dispatches twice) and was 2nd in command of the 23rd Division. Major Molloy was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1917. He retired from the Army in 1921. He was an honorary Life Member of the St. John Ambulance Association and in 1921 was made a Knight of Grace of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. James Lynam Molloy (19 August 1837 – 4 February 1909) was an Irish composer, poet, and author. His songs were praised by his contemporaries; one said that he "will be remembered, or certainly his songs will, long after the 'superior' and so-called 'art-songs' of to-day are forgotten."
