Molloy
Molloy or O'Molloy is an Irish surname, anglicised from Ó Maolmhuaidh, maolmhuadh meaning 'Proud Chieftain'. (See also Malloy.) They were part of the southern Uí Néill, the southern branch of the large tribal grouping claiming descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages, the fifth-century king who supposedly kidnapped St Patrick to Ireland. They held power over a large part of what is now Co Offaly, where the surname is still very common. A second family were the O Maoil Aodha, 'descendant of the devotee of (St) Aodh', from maol, literally 'bald', a reference to the distinctive tonsure sported by early Irish monks. As well as Molloy, this surname has also been anglicised as Mulloy, Malloy, Maloy, 'Miley' and 'Millea'. Georgiana Molloy (23 May 1805 – 8 April 1843) was an early settler in Western Australia, who is remembered as one of the first botanical collectors in the colony. Captain John Molloy (5 September 1786 – 6 October 1867) was an early Irish settler in Western Australia. He was one of the original settlers of Augusta and an early settler of Busselton. Early life The outline of John Molloy's birth and early life are believed by some to be clear, though there is little detail and published accounts vary greatly. This is just one possible version that he was the same John Molloy who was baptised at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, on 8 October 1786, the son of William and Mary Molloy. James Lynam Molloy
James Lynam Molloy (19 August 1837 – 4 February 1909) was an Irish composer, poet, and author. His songs were praised by his contemporaries; one said that he "will be remembered, or certainly his songs will, long after the 'superior' and so-called 'art-songs' of to-day are forgotten." Charles Molloy (died 16 July 1767) was an Irish journalist and political activist on the Jacobite side, as well as a minor playwright. Life The 18th century '' Biographia dramatica'' says that Molloy attended Trinity College, Dublin before moving to London and writing plays. ''A Compendium of Irish Biography'' states he "was born in Dublin early in the 18th century". His three known plays were performed at Lincoln's Inn Fields. '' The Perplexed Couple'' (1715) and ''The Coquet'' (1718) had three-night runs, but ''The Half Pay Officers'' (1720) was a success. Albin O'Molloy
Albin O'Molloy ( ga, Ailbe Ua Maíl Mhuaidh) (died 1223) was the Irish bishop of Ferns. Background O'Molloy was native of what is now north County Tipperary. He became a Cistercian monk at Baltinglass, and eventually rose to be abbot of that house. His family, the O'Molloy, claimed descent from the branch of the Connachta later to be known as the southern Uí Néill. Francie Molloy ( ga, Proinsias Ó Maolmhuaidh; born 16 December 1950) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been the abstentionist Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Ulster since 2013. He was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Mid Ulster from 1998 to 2013. He first stood for Sinn Féin in Fermanagh and South Tyrone in the 1982 Assembly Elections, finishing sixth in the five-seat constituency. Death Of Niall Molloy
Father Niall Molloy (14 April 1933 – 8 July 1985) was a Catholic priest who was killed in mysterious circumstances in Kilcoursey House in Clara, County Offaly, the home of Richard and Therese Flynn. When the Garda Síochána arrived, they found that there were signs of violence in Flynn's bedroom and that there was a large bloodstain on the carpet. The priest died the day after the wedding of the Flynns' daughter Maureen. Richard Flynn was charged with manslaughter and with actual bodily harm, but Judge Frank Roe at his trial, a family friend, directed the jury to give a not guilty verdict. In 2011, a medical examination of brain tissue kept after the original post-mortem revealed that there was a high probability that the priest was alive up to six hours after the initial attack and therefore might have lived if medical help had been summoned.
