Moldova competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, from 7 to 23 February 2014. Moldova's team consists of four athletes in four sports. Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti did not attend the 2014 Winter Olympics. He has not said publicly that the decision was a political gesture. Alpine skiing According to the quota allocation released on 20 January 2014, Moldova had two athletes in qualification position. However naturalized Italy, Italian Alpine skiing, alpine skier Mirko Deflorian withdrew from the team citing poor results. The men's luge at the 2014 Winter Olympics was held between 8–9 February 2014 at the Sliding Center Sanki in Rzhanaya Polyana, Russia. Germany's Felix Loch was the two-time defending world champion and won the gold medal with the fastest time in two of the four runs. The test event that took place at the venue was won by Germany's Andi Langenhan. Loch was also the defending Olympic champion. 2013–14 Luge World Cup
The 2013–14 Luge World Cup was a multi race tournament over a season for luge organised by the FIL. The season started on 16 November 2013 in Lillehammer, Norway and ended on 26 January 2014 in Sigulda, Latvia. After the World Cup, the athletes moved for two weeks to Sochi for the Luge event in the XXII Olympic Winter Games. The defending individual World Champions were Felix Loch and Natalie Geisenberger, both from Germany. The men's freestyle sprint cross-country skiing competition in the free technique at the 2014 Sochi Olympics took place on 11 February at Laura Biathlon & Ski Complex. Ola Vigen Hattestad won the gold medal. Qualification An athlete with a maximum of 100 FIS distance points (the A standard) will be allowed to compete in both or one of the events (sprint/distance).
