Mohamed Zaki
Dato' Mohamed Zaki (born 20 February 1953), also known as Nazaki Zaki or Sandhaanu Zaki, is a businessman and politician in the Maldives. Zaki is the founder of Nazaki Services Pvt Ltd, which is a company in the Maldives to the extent that all local news media refer to him as Nazaki Zaki. While being a businessman, he was also a part-time politician in the opposition party MDP Maldivian Democratic Party. He is among the few political figures in the Maldives who had stood up against a corrupt government during the time when there was no freedom of speech in the country. The struggle that he and others had undergone has made a political impact within four to five years. In 2007, Maldivians were able to speak openly against the government and the police without the fear of being arrested, beaten, or tortured. This was a complete change compared to 2003. Muad Mohamed Zaki
Muad Mohamed Zaki (born 7 April 1982) is from a prominent left wing political and business family in the Maldives. He migrated to Malaysia with his family in the 1990s after political turmoil in the Maldives that temporarily drove out large private business owners from the country. His father Dato' Mohamed Zaki is a highly respected figure in the Maldives by Presidents and other political figures. The family owns a well-known multinational firm named Nazaki Group of Companies, which pioneered international trade between Malaysia and Maldives. Muad began his political activism through his studies on socialism while in the United Kingdom. He was one of the first members of the Maldivian Democratic Party when it was first formed. Datuk (or its variant Dato or Datu) is a Malay title commonly used in Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia, as well as a traditional title by Minangkabau people in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Sandhaanu
''Sandhaanu'' (meaning ''Throne'' in English) was an online political news magazine in the Maldives. It was launched in 1999. Its main editor Ahmed Didi together with his main contributors Ibrahim Lutfy and Mohamed Zaki were sentenced to life in prison while another editor (Fathimath Nisreen) to 10 years in prison in 2003 for their criticism of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his government. Mohamed Nasheed
Mohamed Nasheed GCSK (; born 17 May 1967) is a Maldivian politician and activist currently serving as the 19th speaker of the People's Majlis since May 2019. A founding member of the Maldivian Democratic Party, he served as President of the Maldives from 2008 until his resignation in 2012. He is the first democratically elected president of the Maldives and the only president to resign from office. Born in Malé, Nasheed was educated overseas before returning to the Maldives and becoming involved in political activism.
