Mohamed Macan Markar
Sir Hadji Mohamed Macan Markar (7 September 1877 – 10 May 1952) was a prominent Ceylonese colonial era legislator and businessmen. He was Minister of Home Affairs of the State Council, member of the Legislative Council and a Senator. Markar was born 5 October 1885 in Galle, the son of Oduma Lebbe Marikar Macan Markar, a wealthy merchant from Galle, and was educated at Wesley College, Colombo, where he played cricket before going into the family business. Markar was elected as a member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon in 1924 and later to the State Council. He became the Minister of Communications and Works. He was knighted in the 1938 Birthday Honours as a Knight Bachelor. From 1948 to 1952 he was a member of the Senate of Ceylon. He was knighted in 1938. Galle
Galle ( si, ගාල්ල, translit=Gālla; ta, காலி, translit=Kāli) (formerly Point de Galle) is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, from Colombo. Galle is the provincial capital and largest city of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and is the capital of Galle District. Galle was known as ''Gimhathiththa'' before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, when it was the main port on the island. Ibn Batuta, a Moroccan Berber Muslim traveller in the 14th century, referred to it as ''Qali''. Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonial period. Muhammad Ajward Macan Markar
Muhammad Ajward Macan Markar, FRCP is a Sri Lankan physician, academic. He was the first Professor of Medicine at the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya. Born to Sir Mohamed Macan Markar, he was educated at Royal College Colombo, where he played cricket for the college at the Royal-Thomian. Macan Markar went on to study medicine at the University of Ceylon, where he also represented the university at cricket. Graduating with a MBBS and winning the gold medal for in obstetrics and gynaecology, he went on to gain MBBS and M.D. from the University of London and MRCP by 1952. University Of Ceylon, Peradeniya
The University of Ceylon was the only university in Sri Lanka (earlier Ceylon) from 1942 until 1972. It had several constituent campuses at various locations around Sri Lanka. The University of Ceylon Act No. 1 of 1972, replaced it with the University of Sri Lanka which existed from 1973 to 1978. In 1978 it was separated into four independent universities. These are the University of Colombo, the University of Peradeniya, University of Kelaniya (Vidyalankara University) and the University of Sri Jayawardanapura (Vidyodaya University).
