Mohamed Bazoum (cropped)
Mohamed Bazoum ( ar, محمد بازوم, Muḥammad Bāzūm; born 1 January 1960) is a Nigerien politician who served as the 10th president of Niger from 2021 to 2023. He assumed office in April 2021 after winning the 2020–21 presidential election and surviving a failed coup d'état attempt. He was ousted in the 2023 Nigerien coup d'état by members of the presidential guard and the armed forces led by Abdourahamane Tchiani. Before becoming president, he served as the president of the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS-Tarayya). He also served in as a minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 1996 and again from 2011 to 2016. He was minister of State at the Presidency briefly in 2016 and was later appointed minister of State for the Interior between 2016 until his election as president in 2021, when he resigned to focus on running for the 2020–21 presidential election. Tesker
Tesker or Tasker is a village and rural commune in Niger. As of 2010, it had a population of 33,544 people. It is the birthplace of musician Mamane Barka (b. 1958). The sparsely populated commune extends over a wide area and spans two major regions: the Sahel region in the south and the Sahara desert in the north. In the northeast, it rises up to a height of at the Termit Massif. It is bordered by Fachi and Tabelot in the north, N'Gourti to the east, Alakoss, Kellé and N'Guelbély to the south and Tenhya to the west. The municipality is divided into 36 administrative villages, one traditional village, three hamlets, 29 camps and 144 watering places. Niger Armed Forces
The Niger Armed Forces (french: Forces armées nigériennes) (FAN) includes military armed force service branches (Niger Army and Niger Air Force), paramilitary services branches ( National Gendarmerie of Niger and National Guard of Niger) and the National Police. The Niger Army, Niger Air Force and the National Gendarmerie of Niger are under the Ministry of Defense whereas the National Guard of Niger and the National Police fall under the command of the Ministry of Interior. 2023 Nigerien Coup D'état
On 26 July 2023, a coup d'état occurred in Niger when the country's presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum, and Presidential Guard commander General officer, General Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself the leader of a new military National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, junta, shortly after confirming the coup a success. This was the fifth military coup d'état since the country gained independence from France in 1960, and the first since 2010 Nigerien coup d'état, 2010. The 2021 Nigerien coup d'etat attempt occurred on 31 March at around 3 am West Africa Time, WAT (2 am Coordinated Universal Time, UTC) after gunfire erupted in the streets of Niamey, the capital of Niger, two days before the inauguration of List of heads of state of Niger, president-elect Mohamed Bazoum. The Coup d'etat, coup attempt was staged by elements within the Niger Armed Forces, military, and was attributed to an Niger Air Force, Air Force unit based in the area of the Diori Hamani International Airport, Niamey Airport. Ouled Slimane People
The Ouled Slimane (also spelled Oulad Souleymane or Awlad Suleiman) are an Arab people and tribe originating from the Fezzan region of modern-day Libya. Populations of Ouled Slimanes are also present in Chad and eastern Niger. Since the early 19th century, they joined the Magarha, Warfalla and the Qadhadhfa to form the Saff al-Fauqi alliance, which opposed the Saff al-Bahar. With the fall of the Karamanli Dynasty, the Oualad Suleiman reached the height of their power in the late 1830s. However, in the 1840s, after conflicts with the Ottomans, many decided to leave Libya and flee to Chad, where the surrounding states such as Wadai and Bornu were far weaker than the Ottoman Empire.
