The Mogollon Baldy Lookout Cabin, in Gila National Forest on Mogollon Baldy peak, in New Mexico, was built in 1923. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is a log cabin close to the lookout tower near the peak. The listing does not include the lookout tower itself. Gila National Forest
The Gila National Forest is a protected national forest in New Mexico in the southwestern part of the United States established in 1905. It covers approximately of public land, making it the sixth largest National Forest in the continental United States. The Forest also manages the part of the Apache National Forest that is in New Mexico which totals an additional 614,202 acres for a total of 3.3 million acres managed by the Gila National Forest. Part of the forest, the Gila Wilderness, was established in 1924 as the first designated wilderness reservation by the U.S. federal government. Lookout Tower
A fire lookout tower, fire tower or lookout tower, provides housing and protection for a person known as a "fire lookout" whose duty it is to search for wildfires in the wilderness. It is a small building, usually on the summit of a mountain or other high vantage point, to maximize viewing distance and range, known as ''view shed''. From this vantage point the fire lookout can see smoke that may develop, determine the location by using a device known as an ''Osborne Fire Finder'', and call fire suppression personnel to the fire. The Mogollon Mountains or Mogollon Range ( or ) are a mountain range in Grant County and Catron County of southwestern New Mexico, in the Southwestern United States.
