Moema (Victor Meirelles)
Moema is an oil painting on canvas created in 1866 by Brazilian artist Victor Meirelles. It depicts the homonym character from the epic poem Caramuru (1781), by Santa Rita Durão. The work does not depict a scene from the poem, but instead Meirelles's personal interpretation of the character's fate, submerging into the water after being rejected by Caramuru. The painting was shown for the first time in 1866, in the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. It is a part of the collection of the São Paulo Museum of Art The São Paulo Museum of Art ( pt, Museu de Arte de São Paulo, or ') is an art museum located on Paulista Avenue in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Moema (district Of São Paulo)
Moema is a district in the south region of the city of São Paulo. Toponym The toponym "Moema" is a reference to the character, possibly fictional, of the poem Caramuru (book), Caramuru, by Santa Rita Durão, classic of the Arcade literature in Brazil, Brazilian arcade literature written in 1781. The character's name, in turn, corresponds to the Tupi language, Old Tupi language ''mo'ema'', which means "lie" (in the poem, Moema was the lover rejected by the main character, Caramuru, Diogo Álvares, thus representing false love, as opposed to true love, represented by Diogo's wife, Catarina Paraguaçu).NAVARRO, E. Moema (fish)
''Moema'' is a genus of fish in the family Rivulidae. These annual killifish are mostly restricted to the Amazon basin in Bolivia, Brazil and Peru, but a few inhabit the upper Essequibo basin in Guyana, upper Orinoco basin in Venezuela and upper Paraguay basin in Brazil. They inhabit temporary waters, such as swamps or ponds, in primary forests. Once the water disappears, the adults die, but the eggs that have been laid in the bottom remain, only hatching after 3–10 months when the water returns. They rapidly reach adult size, but generally only live a few months after hatching, although captives (not subjected to disappearing water) can live longer. They are small fish, with the largest species up to in total length. Species ''Moema'' was first described in 1989, having formerly been included in the ''Pterolebias''. In 1998, it was suggested that several ''Moema'' species should be moved to their own genus, ''Aphyolebias''. Some, including FishBase, continue to recognize bot ...
