Modernising Scientific Careers
Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) is a UK-wide government initiative to address the training and education needs of the whole healthcare science workforce in the National Health Service (NHS). The initiative won a Healthcare Innovation Award in 2013. Its stated aims are to introduce flexibility, sustainability and modern career pathways for the healthcare science workforce to meet future needs of the NHS. Background and history Modernising Scientific Careers is a joint initiative of the four health departments of the UK led by the Chief Scientific Officer at the Department of Health, Professor Sue Hill OBE. It is analogous to the Modernising Medical Careers scheme for doctor training. The National Health Service (NHS) is the Publicly funded health care, publicly funded healthcare system in England, and one of the four National Health Service systems in the United Kingdom. The Chief Scientific Officer in England is the head of profession for the 53,000 healthcare scientists working in the National Health Service and its associated bodies. The Chief Scientific Officer is one of the NHS professional officers (including the National Medical Director and Chief Nursing Officer) who are employed within NHS England. Sue Hill
Dame Susan Lesley Hill (born 14 April 1955) has been the Chief Scientific Officer for England since October 2002. Professional and academic background Hill's professional background is as a healthcare scientist in the National Health Service (NHS) specialising in respiratory medicine. She gained a PhD in Respiratory Sciences having undertaken a programme of basic science research into the pathogenesis of chronic lung disease at the University of Birmingham. She spent three decades at what is now University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and as an academic at the University of Birmingham Medical School. She has a personal Chair in Respiratory Medicine at Birmingham University. Modernising Medical Careers
Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) is a programme for postgraduate medical training introduced in the United Kingdom in 2005. The programme replaced the traditional grades of medical career before the level of Consultant. The different stages of the programme contribute towards a "Certificate of Completion of Training" (CCT). It has been dogged by criticism within and outside the medical profession, and an independent review of MMC led by Professor Sir John Tooke criticised many aspects of it. MMC refers to both the programme itself, and also to the temporary organization, formed in 2003, responsible for its nationwide implementation. NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an education and training body and a special health board within NHS Scotland.
