The Berkeley Version is an English translation of the Bible. The New Testament was published by Zondervan Zondervan is an international Christian media and publishing company located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A revised version was published as the New Berkeley Version or Modern Language Bible in 1969. The stated aim of this version was to achieve plain, up-to-date expression which reflects as directly as possible the meaning of the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The New Testament was translated by Gerrit Verkuyl, who also supervised the translation of the Old Testament by a panel of twenty evangelical scholars. Gerrit Verkuyl
Gerrit Verkuijl or Gerrit Verkuyl (18 September 1872, Haarlemmermeer – 19 March 1967, Alameda, California) was a New Testament Greek scholar and Bible Translator. He emigrated from the Netherlands to the United States at 21, becoming a farmhand in California. He later went to college, earning degrees from Park College of Kansas City, Princeton University, and the University of Leipzig. He became a minister in the Presbyterian church, serving as a pastor in Philadelphia, then working for the Board of Education of the PC(USA). "This brought him in contact with young people throughout the country and resulted in his seeing the need for a Bible translation in up-to-date language." He moved to Berkeley, California, to work on his translation, hence the name of his New Testament translation, '' Berkeley Version''. It was based on Tischendorf's eighth edition of the Greek text. Bible Translations Into English
Partial Bible translations into languages of the English people can be traced back to the late 7th century, including translations into Old and Middle English. More than 100 complete translations into English have been written. In the United States, 55% of survey respondents who read the Bible reported using the King James Version in 2014, followed by 19% for the New International Version, 18% for the three next most popular versions combined, and less than 10% for all other versions. Old English The Bible in its entirety was not translated into English until the Middle English period, with John Wycliffe's translation in 1382. In the centuries before this, however, many had translated large portions of the Bible into English. Parts of the Bible were first translated from the Latin Vulgate into Old English by a few monks and scholars.
