Modbury Football Club
The Modbury Football Club (nicknamed the ''Hawks'') is an Australian rules football club based in Modbury, a suburb of Adelaide in South Australia. Formed in 1862, the Modbury Football Club is the oldest extant football club in South Australia and the sixth oldest football club of any code in Australia. The Modbury Hawks currently field 30 teams. Senior teams compete in the South Australian Amateur Football League and junior teams in the North Eastern Metropolitan Junior Football League. It also now fields a women's team and an under-18 girls' team in the SAWFL. The club has over 550 registered players. History The first game recorded as taking place was between Modbury and the Adelaide Football Club in 1862. Each side had 20 players but there were no umpires. The game ended after Adelaide kicked its second goal and the game was declared in their favour, 2 goals to nil. The Adelaide Footy League, formerly known as the South Australian Amateur Football League (SAAFL), is a semi-professional Australian rules football competition based in Adelaide, South Australia. Comprising sixty-seven member clubs playing over one hundred and ten matches per week, the SAAFL is one of Australia's largest Australian rules football associations. The league currently provides competition across eight Senior divisions with Reserves grades, accompanied by a separate C grade competition, all from Divisions 1 to 7. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Modbury, South Australia
Modbury is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of Tea Tree Gully. Modbury is located at the end of the Adelaide O-Bahn and is home to the Tea Tree Plaza shopping complex and a Hospital. It was named Modbury by R. S. Kelly, on 1 September 1840, after his native town in Devonshire. Schools The suburb of Modbury contains one high school ( Modbury High School) and one Primary School (Modbury West). However, there are many other schools in the surrounding areas which also bear the name Modbury. Modbury South Primary for example is located in the suburb of Hope Valley. There is also another primary school named Modbury School which was originally in Modbury proper but relocated in the 1970s to what is now known as Modbury North. This is a chronological list of Australian rules football clubs since their formation. Note that some of these football clubs that formed before 1866 (see Laws of Australian football) may not have originally played the game known today as Australian rules football. It is more than likely that most of these clubs were influenced the Melbourne Rules of 1859 which were the dominant rules of the day. However many played by their own rules and often compromised rules when playing against other clubs. Adelaide Football Club (SAFA)
The Adelaide Football Club, often referred to as the Old Adelaide Football Club, was an Australian rules football club based in Adelaide. Founded on 26 April 1860, it was the first football club formed in South Australia. The club played interclub football in South Australia until 1872, when it had disputes with Kensington and Port Adelaide over the rules, but club resumed interclub matches in 1875. In 1876, the Adelaide Club rules were adopted by all the South Australian clubs at a meeting organised by Charles Kingston from the South Adelaide Football Club, and in 1877, the Adelaide club captain Richard Twopeny called an initial meeting which led to the formation of the South Australian Football Association (SAFA) and participated in the competition from 1877–81 and 1885–93. The North Adelaide District Football Association (NADFA) was an Australian rules football competition based in the northern and north-eastern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia until it merged with the East Torrens Football Association to form the Norwood-North Football Association at the end of the 1968 season.
