Mockery (1927 Film)
''Mockery'' (1927) is an American silent film about the Russian Revolution starring Lon Chaney. The movie was the second film made in Hollywood by Danish director Benjamin Christensen and stars Chaney as a Siberian peasant who aids a countess (played by Barbara Bedford) who is threatened by the encroaching insurgency. The screenplay was written by Bradley King, based on a story by Benjamin Christensen, which in turn was adapted from a short story by Stig Esbern. The sets were designed by Cedric Gibbons and Alexander Toluboff. The film's original shooting title was ''Terror''. It was in production from May 19, 1927 to June 27, 1927, and cost $187,000 to make. The film grossed $751,000 worldwide. Johnny Mack Brown, who later became a famous Western star, played a soldier in a small uncredited role. Stills exist showing Chaney's make-up as Sergei. Benjamin Christensen
Benjamin Christensen (28 September 1879 – 2 April 1959) was a Danish people, Danish film director, screenwriter and an actor, both in film and on the stage. As a director, he is best known for the 1922 film ''Häxan'' (aka ''Witchcraft Through the Ages''). His most memorable acting performance was in the film ''Michael (1924 film), Michael'' (1924), where he played Claude Zoret, the male lover of the film's title character in a landmark gay film. Biography Benjamin Christensen was born in Viborg, Denmark, Viborg as the youngest of twelve children. He initially studied medicine but got interested in acting and began studies at the Det Kongelige Teater (Royal Danish Theatre) in Copenhagen in 1901. Christensen's professional acting career began in Aarhus in 1907, but he did not act for long. He soon abandoned the stage in order to become a wine salesman. Charles Puffy
Charles Puffy (born Károly Hochstadt; 3 November 1884 – 1942 or 1943) was a Hungarian film actor. Biography Hochstadt appeared in more than 130 films between 1914 and 1938. He was the only slapstick star in Hungary's silent film era, appearing under the name "Pufi" (meaning "Fatty" in Hungarian, referring to his weight) and Carlie Puffy in the United States for Universal Studios. His other stage names were Károly Huszár or Pufi Huszár. Besides his work on films, he frequently appeared on stage, mostly in comical roles. Later, he worked in films in both Germany and the United States, including such classics as Fritz Lang's '' Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler'' (''Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler'') (1922) and Josef von Sternberg's '' Der blaue Engel'' (''The Blue Angel'') (1930). Michael Simeon Visaroff (December 18, 1889 – February 27, 1951) was a Russian American film character actor. Biography Visaroff was born Mikhail Semenonovich Vizarov (Russian: Михаил Семёнович Визаров) in Moscow, Russia. He was a graduate of the Russian Principal Dramatic School. Visaroff started his career on stage: In July 1922, Visaroff came to the United States with a group from the Kamerny Theatre in Moscow. With a 14-week leave of absence from Russia, the group planned to present 12 plays, each lasting one week, in a Broadway theater. He eventually made the transition to film, appearing in more than 110 films between 1925 and 1952.
