Mock, Washington
Mock is an extinct town in Spokane County, Washington, Spokane County, in the U.S. state of Washington (state), Washington. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place. The community was named after W. C. Mock, a railroad official. The town was located along the defunct Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway, the right-of-way of which is now the publicly accessible Columbia Plateau Trail. The site is located in the Channeled Scablands about eight miles southwest of Cheney, Washington, Cheney and just outside the eastern edge of Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. The community of Amber, Washington is 4.8 miles southwest of Mock on the trail and another ghost town, Rodna, Washington, Rodna lies six miles beyond that. Columbia Plateau Trail
The Columbia Plateau State Park Trail is a , corridor in eastern Washington state maintained as part of the Washington State Park system. The rail trail runs along the abandoned right-of-way of the former Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway. Route Beginning at Cheney, Washington, the trail runs to the confluence of the Snake and Columbia rivers at Pasco, passing through five counties in the southeastern part of the state. The trail is mostly gravel, except for a 3.75 mile portion between the Cheney and Fish Lake trailheads. Recreational uses include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, in-line skating on paved portions, and wildlife viewing. The close proximity of the railroad to the paved portion makes this section of the trail a popular spot for railfanning. Missoula Floods
The Missoula floods (also known as the Spokane floods or the Bretz floods or Bretz's floods) were cataclysmic glacial lake outburst floods that swept periodically across eastern Washington and down the Columbia River Gorge at the end of the last ice age. These floods were the result of periodic sudden ruptures of the ice dam on the Clark Fork River that created Glacial Lake Missoula. After each ice dam rupture, the waters of the lake would rush down the Clark Fork and the Columbia River, flooding much of eastern Washington and the Willamette Valley in western Oregon. After the lake drained, the ice would reform, creating Glacial Lake Missoula again. These floods have been researched since the 1920s. Rodna, Washington
Rodna is an extinct town in Spokane County, in the U.S. state of Washington. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place. A post office called Rodna was established in 1912, and remained in operation until 1931. A variant name was Ray. Rodna was located in the far southeastern corner of Spokane County in the Channeled Scablands. The defunct Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway ran through the site of the town, which is now accessible via the Columbia Plateau Trail. Rodna's location is about two miles northeast of the Martin Road trailhead. The trail connects the site with the site of another ghost town, Mock, located 10 miles north along the trail. The unincorporated community of Amber and the small lake of the same name lie midway between the two ghost towns. Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge
The Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge is located six miles (10 km) south of Cheney, Washington, on the eastern edge of the Columbia Basin in Spokane County in northeastern Washington. The Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway (SP&S) was a railroad in the northwest United States. Incorporated in 1905, it was a joint venture by the Great Northern Railway and the Northern Pacific Railway to build a railroad along the north bank of the Columbia River.
