''Mochlus'' is a genus of skinks, lizards in the family Scincidae. The genus is endemic to Africa. Description Skinks of the genus ''Mochlus'' are cylindrical in shape and robust. They get the common name "writhing skinks" from the side-to-side movement that they make when held in the hand. Mochlus Fernandi
The fire skink (''Mochlus fernandi''), also known as the true fire skink or Togo fire skink, is a fairly large skink, a species of lizard in the Family (biology), family Scincidae. The species is known for its bright and vivid coloration. Native to tropical forests in West Africa, West and Central Africa, the fire skink lives fifteen to twenty years. This species is a Diurnality, diurnal lizard that loves to burrow and hide. It is relatively shy and reclusive, but may become tame in captivity. Etymology The Specific name (zoology), specific name, ''fernandi'', refers to the island formerly known as Fernando Po, which has been called Bioko since 1979. Skinks are lizards belonging to the family Scincidae, a family in the infraorder Scincomorpha. With more than 1,500 described species across 100 different taxonomic genera, the family Scincidae is one of the most diverse families of lizards.
