Mobile Naval Airfields Organisation
Mobile Operational Naval Air Bases (MONABs) were a series of mobile units first formed in 1944 to provide logistical support to the Fleet Air Arm aircraft of the Royal Navy's British Pacific Fleet towards the end of World War II. Each unit was self-contained and designed to service and repair aircraft and engines. Each were initially assembled at the MONAB Headquarters at HMS Flycatcher (first at Ludham then Middle Wallop in the UK). When the naval threat in the Atlantic was clearly vanishing, with the decline of Nazi Germany, proposals were made to involve the Royal Navy in the Pacific War. The United States Navy's Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Ernest King, did not welcome this, however. Ponam Island
Ponam Island with ruway and base. Ponam Island is located off the north coast of Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. The Ponam language is spoken on the island. The Ponam Airfield was built by the US Navy 78th Naval Construction Battalion "Seabees" between June to August 1944. As half of the work area was swamp, coral was blasted and dredged from the ocean bed and used as landfill. Royal Naval Air Station
The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) is one of the five fighting arms of the Royal Navy and is responsible for the delivery of naval air power both from land and at sea. The Fleet Air Arm operates the F-35 Lightning II for maritime strike, the AW159 Wildcat and AW101 Merlin for commando and anti-submarine warfare and the BAE Hawk as an aggressor. Admiralty Islands
The Admiralty Islands are an archipelago group of 18 islands in the Bismarck Archipelago, to the north of New Guinea in the South Pacific Ocean. Bankstown is a suburb south west of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
