Mo Award
The Australian Entertainment Mo Awards (commonly known informally as the Mo Awards) were an annual Australian entertainment industry award, that where established in 1975, to recognise achievements in live entertainment in Australia. They were last awarded in 2016. Lucky Grills, actor and comedian came up with the idea to create an awards show to celebrate Australian Variety, during a meeting in 1975. The Mo Awards, initially were founded as the Star Awards and were a state honour in New South Wales only, local entertainers started the awards to promote the live entertainment industry in New South Wales. Johnny O'Keefe became chairman in 1976, and decided the awards should become an Australia-wide national awards program. Entertainer Don Lane then proposed the awards be renamed the Mo Awards in honour of Australian comedian and vaudevillian Roy Rene, who was famous for the character "Mo McCackie." Johnny Ashcroft
John Lewis Ashcroft FAIHA (1 February 1927 – 19 May 2021) was an Australian country music and folk entertainer, singer, songwriter, and musician, who also recorded pop, skiffle, jazz, and disco as his alter ego, the Baron. He was married to fellow performer Gay Kayler, with whom he recorded on numerous occasions. Career 1927–1953: Early personal and show business background As a child growing up during the Great Depression in Australia, Ashcroft lived in a bag shack with a dirt floor. Lucky Grills
Leo Dennis Grills OAM (26 May 1928 – 27 July 2007) professionally billed as Lucky Grills, was an Australian actor and comedian. His best known acting role was in the crime drama TV series '' Bluey'' playing the title role. Grills took his professionally working name after the Italian-American gangster Lucky Luciano. Grills is credited for initiating the ''Mo Awards'', an awards show that celebrate Australian Variety in 1975. The Four Kinsmen
The Four Kinsmen were an Australian vocal group formed in 1962 and become stalwarts of Australia's live performance circuit in the later part of the twentieth century and hold the record for the most Mo Awards wins. History In 1962, Bernard and Adrian Mahony joined with brothers Peter and George Fay to form The Four Kinsmen. Their first TV appearance was on the ''Kevin Dennis Auditions'' in July 1963. After appearing on the show multiple times, they went on to win and were given a spot-on Graham Kennedy's ''In Melbourne Tonight''. In 1964 they released their first single, "The Sphinx Won’t Tell"/"The Last Leaf", recorded at Television City in Melbourne, it reached number 10 on the Melbourne 3DB chart. Allison Durbin
Allison Ann Giles, who performed as Allison Ann Durbin (born 24 May 1950), is a former New Zealand Australian singer, known for her success in the late 1960s and 1970s as the " Queen of Pop". Keith Scott (born 28 October 1953) is an Australian voice actor, comedian, impressionist and animation historian. Career At a young age, Scott was always enchanted by the mimics and impressionists on ''The Ed Sullivan Show''. He began developing his ability to impersonate voices in high school, doing cartoon characters (the first of which being Mr. Jinks) and teacher's voices. In October 1972, just after leaving school, Scott was hired by William Hanna, the head of Hanna-Barbera, which had established a large animation studio in Sydney, Australia. John Peter Farnham AO (born 1 July 1949) is a British born Australian singer. Jimmy Hannan
Jimmy Hannan (25 August 1934 – 7 January 2019) was an Australian radio and television personality, variety show host, singer, entertainer and game show host of the 1960s and 1970s. One of the pioneers of television, he appeared regularly on variety show ''In Melbourne Tonight'', and later hosted his own musical variety show ''Jimmy'', later called ''Tonight with Jimmy Hannan''. Slim De Grey
Clifford Frank de Grey (20 May 1918 – 16 March 2007), better known as Slim De Grey, was an English-Australian actor, compere, musician, lyricist, composer and comedian. He served in the Australian Army during World War II, seeing action in the Malayan campaign with the 2/10th Field Ambulance, part of the 8th Division of the Second Australian Imperial Force. He became a POW at the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and was imprisoned in Changi Prison until the end of the war. While at Changi he composed, presented and produced shows.
