Miz Ima Starr
Miz Ima Starr is a New Zealand/American singing drag cabaret performer of stage and small screen. She is the comic creation of Charles Bracewell, best known for her appearances on reality TV show Australia's Got Talent. Bracewell produced and/or directed six films and one documentary television series, most notably the short film Siren starring Craig Hall (actor) and Dean O'Gorman. The film screened at forty film festivals worldwide and was described by ImageOut as being ''"A beautifully shot piece on the process of grief, this film deftly explores the conflicted emotions of a young soldier whose mysterious encounter with a siren allows him to come to terms with the loss of his best friend (and lover) in battle''". He co-hosted In The Pink, the first GLBTIQ show on an FM station in New Zealand, with Rick Huntington on Auckland's 95bFM Radio from 1991 to 1998. Flying Nun Records is a New Zealand independent record label formed in Christchurch in 1981 by music store manager Roger Shepherd. Described by ''The Guardian'' as "one of the world's great independent labels", Flying Nun is notable for bringing global attention to the Dunedin sound, a cultural and musical movement in early 1980s Dunedin, which gave rise to modern indie rock. Hero Parade
The Hero Parade was an (almost) annual gay and lesbian Parade through the streets of Auckland, New Zealand, in the 1990s. The last Parade was in 2001. It was the showpiece of the Hero Festival in Auckland which runs to the present day. The Hero Parade and Festival usually took place in February, a week or two ahead of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. The Parade was an event attended by more than one hundred thousand people annually, (and at its height, by as many as two hundred thousand), in the years that it ran, from 1992 to 2001. LGBT rights in New Zealand were significantly improved because of the Hero Parade. The Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) is the largest stand-alone comedy festival and the second-largest international comedy festival in the world.
