Mitsuo Miura
was a Japanese cinematographer who photographed more than 100 films in a career which spanned 30 years. He worked for film directors such as Shirō Toyoda, Heinosuke Gosho, Mikio Naruse, Shigeyoshi Suzuki (film director), Shigeyoshi Suzuki and Kajirō Yamamoto. An award for new cinematographers was named after him in his memory. Biography Miura was born in Miyagi Prefecture. He entered the Kamata, Tokyo, Kamata section of the Shochiku film studios, where he shot his first film in 1925. In 1928, Miura made a trip to Hollywood, Los Angeles, Hollywood for reasons of research, where he was impressed by the use of shadows in the films of Josef von Sternberg and the abundant lighting in Hollywood films in general. In an article he later contributed to the publication of the Japan Film Photographers Club (modelled on the American Society of Cinematographers), Miura emphasised the importance of lighting and tones in camerawork. Toho
is a Japanese film, theatre production and distribution company. It has its headquarters in Chiyoda, Tokyo, and is one of the core companies of the Osaka-based Hankyu Hanshin Toho Group. is a 1931 Japanese silent comedy drama film directed by Mikio Naruse, and the first surviving film by the director. Naruse biographer Catherine Russell called it a combination "of nansensu comedy, tendency film, and shoshimin-eiga with a particularly flamboyant method of decoupage". Plot Insurance salesman Okabe is scolded by his wife for their shortage of money and always being behind with their rental payments. He promises that the situation will better soon, as he is about to sell an insurance policy to Mrs. Toda, a wealthy neighbour. Ishirō Honda
was a Japanese filmmaker who directed 44 feature films in a career spanning 59 years. The most internationally successful Japanese filmmaker prior to Hayao Miyazaki, his films have had a significant influence on the film industry. Honda entered the Japanese film industry in 1934, working as the third assistant director on Sotoji Kimura's ''The Elderly Commoner's Life Study''. After 15 years of working on numerous films as an assistant director, he made his directorial debut with the short documentary film ''Ise-Shima'' (1949). Honda's first feature film, ''Aoi Shinju, The Blue Pearl'' (1952), was a critical success in Japan at the time and would lead him to direct three subsequent drama films. Donald Richie (17 April 1924 – 19 February 2013) was an American-born author who wrote about the Japanese people, the culture of Japan, and especially Japanese cinema. Although he considered himself primarily a film historian, Richie also directed a number of experimental films, the first when he was seventeen. Biography Richie was born in Lima, Ohio.
