Mitra Idae
''Atrimitra idae'', common name Ida's miter, is a species of medium-sized sea snail, a marine (ocean), marine gastropod mollusk in the family (biology), family Mitridae, the miters. Distribution This miter lives from Northern California, United States, to Baja California, Mexico. Description The shell of this species is strong and heavy. The shells of adults vary from 20 to 60 mm in length. There are three plait (gastropod), folds on the columella (gastropod), columella. The shell itself is a pinkish-tan color, but in life the shell is covered in a strong black periostracum. The body of the animal is all pure white other than its black eye spots. Life habits This miter lays egg capsules attached to rock surfaces. They are yellow or transparent, and about 8mm high. In laboratory conditions, females have been observed depositing over 90 egg capsules in 4 days, and 173 in 17 days. Each capsule contains hundreds of 0.2mm eggs. James Cosmo Melvill (naturalist)
James Cosmo Melvill (1 July 1845 – 4 November 1929) was a British botanist and malacologist who collected plants in Europe and North America. Family Melvill was born at Hampstead, London, on 1 July 1845. He was a grandson of British administrator in India, Sir James Cosmo Melvill (1792–1861), his father being the latter's second son, also James Cosmo Melvill (1821–1880), onetime assistant Under-Secretary of state for India. His mother was Eliza Jane, daughter of Alfred Hardcastle of Hatcham House, Surrey. Melvill married on 30 July 1874, Bertha, daughter of George C. Dewhurst of Lymm, Cheshire and Aberuchill Castle, Perthshire, Scotland. The couple had two sons and four daughters. Education and career Melvill was educated at Harrow School, and Trinity College, Cambridge, which he entered in 1864.
